Mobile Phone USB connection in AmigaOS4? (SOLVED!)

Post by HKvalhe »

Hi, just recently, i tried to connect my Nokia Lumia 520 mobile with its' small and short USB cable to the USB connector on the rear of my AmigaOne 500, running the very latest AmigaOS 4.1 Update 6.

However, i didn't see an icon indicating that the mobile is recognized by AmigaOS4. The reason is that it would be nice to be able to handle, say...pictures taken with the mobile camera and to transfer them directly to my harddrive, for instance.

How can mobiles be recognized in AmigaOS4 using USB cable, if this support is not already there? If not, what will be done to be able to connect our mobiles to AmigaOS4 through USB?

I can of course send emails with attachments and get the pictures that way, but would love to be able to directly connect our mobiles through USB to AmigaOS4 and work with the data files like pictures from the mobile.

Any help would be good :)

I have a work-issued Nokia Lumia 800 and it won't connect to the Amiga, requiring M$ propriety Zune software to access anything stored. Probably the same story for the 520.

My own phone, an LG Arena, connects fine and appears as a mass-storage device.

I believe the iPhone similarly requires propreity iTunes software and won't simply mount as a mass storage device. Not sure about Android phones.

So mobile support in AmigaOS4 is about next to nothing? Ok, currently the only way would be to send files as attachments in emails. That was also how i managed to work with pictures i took with the mobile.

Thank you so much for the quick answer, daveyw :)

The Lumina 520 should have "USB mass storage" support. Maybe you have to enable it somewhere?

You could start SYS:Utilities/USBInspector and take a look at what your Lumina is recognised (or take a look at T:usb.log).

No, every phone that can report as mass storage device works. Usually its almost all Androids.
Fancy phones like Lumia or iPhone require Windows / MacOS X software to do so, so they are "software locked by manufacturer".
It would be interesting to see what their support would say - probably "Your manual indicated our phone only works with Windows / MacOS X".

Good point from both of you. Lumia is using Windows (think the user environment is in fact based on Windows 8, the Metro style), so since Lumia functions are LOCKED to Microsoft's policy, then other systems than Windows and x86-based MacOS Xs are not supported.

it was different with my Casio Exilim Z-2000. AmigaOS4 recognized it right away as an external USB connection, since AmigaOS4 supports many different USB enabled cameras.

With mobiles however, this is limited, it would seem, but mobiles using Android or NOT based on Windows should be viewable in AmigaOS4. I give this more testing.

Thank you both :)

Well, Lumia and IPhones are based on a Windows 8 environment, as it would seem, so that would probably mean these mobiles' functions are locked by the factory and won't work on other systems than Windows/MacOS X for x86. Sad, but true.

But a Picture Tool Protocol appears instead, like this one:

Yes, it would seem that way, as it deals with transfer of datas that can be pictures, videos or just files. So to understand, this is not a problem after all, but rather a limitation of the AmigaOS4 during support for mobiles, but then again, Lumia and IPhone are based on Windows, so these remain under the Microsoft policy.

Yes, the problem seems solved :) Found out about it with the Picture Transfer Protocol that appears :) Thanks, everybody! :)

My own "Sharp Aquos" SH-06D Smartphone has a few quirks...

MTP mode (PTP triggers and GrimReapers)
PTP mode (PTP triggers and only the USB notification happens then "Error retrieving object handles")
Mass Storage is the option that works

EDIT: this phone runs Android 4.0.4 (and currently has several options for connectivity)
