When will the X1000 FC owners get a step-by-step on how to install Debian Squeeze on our X1000 systems?

Re: Debian Squeeze Install Procedures Manual?
Will this cover install both on the stock X1000 FC drive and also a 2nd hard drive if we don't want to fuss with the main drive?
I actually would not mind installing it all on the main drive since I have a TB drive, lots of space.
But, does that mean I have to format the whole drive and re-install Amiga OS again, etc.... or will we be able to partition the main X1000 drive in a way it leaves existing partitions and Amiga OS alone and just use new partition for Linux only?

Re: Debian Squeeze Install Procedures Manual?
The manual, which has just be released to the wider A1-X1000 betatester team (note: a small sub group have been invovled testing Debian Squeeze) covers the installation of Debian Squeeze on the same HDD as the AmigaOS and also on a second HDD. Personally, I prefer Debian on its own HDD but the installtion works with both setups.amigasociety wrote:Will this cover install both on the stock X1000 FC drive and also a 2nd hard drive if we don't want to fuss with the main drive?

If you decided to install Debian on the same HDD as the AmigaOS you will need to create space. An example is provided for "First Contact" systems in the Installtion guide.

Re: Debian Squeeze Install Procedures Manual?
Where can I download a copy of Debian Squeeze for the A1-X1000?
Also, is there a limit on the size of the hard drive that can be installed on the A1-X1000?

Version 1.7 of the Debian Install guide is just being completed to complement the latest Debian Squeeze kernel.darkon_turas wrote:Where can I download a copy of Debian Squeeze for the A1-X1000?

This will be provide to the AmigaONE X1000 beta testers first before being released to the "First Contact" group.
As for the size of the hard drive. It's really up to you. I have several Debian Squeeze installations on my A1-X1000. An experimental Wheezy install on the same hdd as AmigaOS 4 (the Debian partition is ~340 Gb). My standard Debian Squeeze installation is on its own 1TB SATA hdd. I also have a third Debian Squeeze installation is on an 80GB IDE PATA drive. They all co-exist with AmigaOS and can be selected from the Boot Menu.
Anyway, here a little taste of what's in store.

Re: Debian Squeeze Install Procedures Manual?
Nice screen shots Trevor.
I hope that the beta testing period won't be too long for this and it will be available for download soon.
It is not like it is something as critical as an OS4.x utility, or a driver of some hardware component. As long as the installation procedure does not screw up the OS4.x installation, or running Debian Squeeze does not alter the hardware setup in some way that it negatively effects running OS4.x (which I don't see how it could), I don't think holding it back from the First Contact owners for more than a week or so would serve much purpose.
Maybe there are concerns that I am unaware of, as I am no expert at running Linux and have only installed a few different Linux distro's over the last 10 years and have not used any of them extensively.
I doubt that I will use it much on my X1000, as I much prefer running OS4.1.5, instead of any Linux flavor, but I will put it on a separate hard drive and probably boot into Linux rarely, if there is some website I need to visit that the web browsers for OS4.x don't render or run properly right now.

Re: Debian Squeeze Install Procedures Manual?
Thanks, the Debian Squeeze Installation is finished and thanks to the work of a small sub-group of A1-X1000 betatesters Debian Squeeze is running nicely on the A1-X1000. The ~40-page guide is very comprehensive but as usual some knowledge of how Debian works is always useful.AmigaDave wrote:Nice screen shots Trevor.I hope that the beta testing period won't be too long for this and it will be available for download soon.
Debian can be installed on the same hdd as OS4, a second SATA hdd or even a hdd attached to the PATA port. I have all three setup on my AmigaOne X1000 for testing purposes.
I am just waiting for Hyperion to provide the download mechanism for "First Contact" owners so they can obtain the Installation Guide & A1-X1000 Debian Kernel (plus the latest AmigaOS4.1.x drivers for PATA, Serial, Software Power-off button etc).
