Coming back?

Post by kilaueabart »

My X5000 crashed about 14 months ago, and even after a lot of support here, I finally gave up trying to get it going again. But recently I got an email from a kind soul who put me in touch with an Amiga expert who lives not far from me. He did a lot of work on my machine and when he returned it to me I was able to boot my Amiga and linux systems again. But something went wrong, and now I can get to the Amiga side, and use Odyssey to write this, but I can't get at the linux side. Attempts fail after a screenful of:

...
modprobe: WARNING: Module sg not foiund in directory /lib/modules/6.4.0-rc5_A-EON_X5000
...
=> Checking filesystems:
=> Mounting rootfs read-write...
EXT4-fs (sda8): Couldn't remount RDWR because of unprocessed orphan inode list. Please umount/remount instead
mount: /: mount point not mounted or bad option
Cannot continue due to errors above, starting emergency shell.
When ready type exit to continue booting.
/bin/sh: 0: can't access tty; job control turned off
#EXT4-fs (sda8): error count since last fsck: 2
EXT4-fs (sda8): initial error at time 1687510242: ext4_get_journal_inode:5743: inode8
EXT4-fx (sda8): last error at time 1687900451: ext4_get_jornal_inode:5743: inode8

It essentially stops there. If I type "exit" it starts doing "... adjust time server ..." over and over again.

My benefactor suggested I try going to the bottom of the Uboot thing ("Command"?) and at a certain point type:

run fienix
"amigaone" [as password]
$sudo fsck /dev/sda10

The first time I did that, up came the beloved VOID screen. But it hasn't worked since. I end up in that "adjust time server" situation. If I type anything, it asks for a password but nothing I can think of works.

At some point I can type "ls" and I get
bin boot dev etc home lib lib32 lost+found media mnt opt proc root run sbin sys tmp usr var (underlined items show up in green type)

I can "ls" those and get a lot of output much of which is also "ls"able. So I'm convinced that my linux stuff is there, but I have no idea how to use it. I suffer from rather advanced cogiative impairment which doesn't help at all.

You select Fienix and Void starts. Have you connected the hard drives to the previous ports?

Sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately I don't have any idea how to "select starts."

I believe the person who repaired my X5000 replaced my original HD with a new one to which he had copied the old. It looked the same when I looked at it with GParted.

After successfully loading one of my linux programs from the uboot start page a couple times, it stopped working. I contacted my Amiga expert about it and he suggested:

"One possible fix would be to boot another Linux partition and run a file system check to see if it is salvageable.
Here is the process:
Boot machine to the os pock menu, choose command line at the bottom, type "run fienix".
Once Xwindows is loaded, login with amigaone (hope it works), open a shell and type:
$sudo fsck /dev/sda10"

Indeed, that procedure got the desired results the first time I did it. But I must have done something wrong, because now Xwindows does not load and ask for my password.

I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I had noticed /dev/sda8 coming up while trying to load the OS, so I changed the $sudo fsck /dev/sda10 to .../dev/sda8. When the machine told me it had errors and offered to fix them, I accepted the offer and it ended up supposedly fixing dozens, maybe hundreds, of the so-called errors.

OK, this is too weird! I shut OS4 down and rebooted to uboot and this time the run linux thing worked (again)!

I guess I'm in "void2" at /dev/sda10. GParted shows a key after that name. Also supposedly available: MATE /sda5, FIENIX sda6, FIENIX-2 sda7,
void sda8, and FIENIX-DISK sda9. I think I should do some cleaning up. How to decide what to get rid of.
