typing CJK

Post by kilaueabart »

I have the ibus elements necessary for typing in Japanese and Korean installed in Fienix. I was able to choose one of those to type in by clicking on an icon in the panel. A few days ago I went to click that icon and it had vanished. I then messed everything up by resetting the panel, which resulted in losing a lot of shortcuts for things that, fortunately, I can run from the menu anyway, but Ibus is not listed there. I attempted to start it from the terminal but nothing works. Example:

Code: Select all

root@Fienix:~# ibus read-cache
The registry cache is invalid.
root@Fienix:~# ibus version
IBus 1.5.22
root@Fienix:~# ibus engine

(process:3946): IBUS-CRITICAL **: 13:55:00.240: ibus_bus_get_global_engine: assertion 'IBUS_IS_BUS (bus)' failed
No engine is set.
root@Fienix:~# ibus restart
Can't connect to IBus.
Synaptic tells me I have all I need installed. Just to be sure I reinstalled the works. No change. Any suggestions?

I'm off to Void to see if I can download any ibus stuff there, but I am pessimistic.

I was indeed able to download ibus, ibus-anthy, and ibus-hangul to Void. Ibus-gtk3 failed and I forgot a couple others I should have tried. In any event, I get exactly the same results with those terminal commands as I did in Fienix, and I have no idea how to try to run Ibus here.

I was able to start it via System - Other - iBus Preferences on Fienix. I can use an icon in the panel for changing the input method.

I can also start it with the command "ibus-daemon &" in the terminal.

Thank you. I don't have System anymore in my messed up panel, but Menu > Preferences gets me to IBus Preferences and Input Method but I can't figure out how to use them to type Japanese.
Afterwards I tried your alternative method with this slightly interesting result, if only I knew what it means:

Code: Select all

fienix@Fienix:~$ ibus-daemon &
[1] 4507
fienix@Fienix:~$ current session already has an ibus-daemon.

But not so good in fienix. I have finally figured out how to type hiragana (like ばんざい) but I can't convert to kanji (like 日本語), very important in Japanese.
I can also type Korean hangul (like 항국말) and ironically because Korean no longer uses Chinese characters, I can convert Korean (like 韓國말)!
