I've encountered another system freeze and a way to reproduce it like this:
1. Boot from an FFS partition.
2. Open a shell window and enter "lock System: on word".
3. Open DiskImageGUI but don't don't do anything with it (just leave it open).
5. Open SYS:System/FInd and select only the System partition for a search.
6. Enter "Installer" in the Pattern string gadget and click the Start button.
The FInd program stops partway through the search. The pointer can be moved but no windows can be opened or closed. No programs can be started but some programs that are already running will partially work.
Can anyone else reproduce this problem?

Re: Another system freeze
Followed all steps except the FFS bit as I don't have an FFS partition (except the amigaboot.of partition and I'm not messing with that one
) and get no lockup here.
Do you get anything on serial when this lockup occurs?

Re: Another system freeze
There is a long-known problem with FFS that makes it crash if you try to write to a write-protected volume. That is the reason for the "WaitForValidate" option in the SetPatch line in Startup-Sequence.
Given the age of the filesystem, it is most unlikely that it will be fixed.
As Andy said, I would suggest SFS\00 for the system volume.

Re: Another system freeze
It's better to use SFS/02, but for compatbility with more old software and stuffs, one partition can use SFS/00.
Like others say, FFS is obsolete. So is JFXS, that is no longer supported.
Out of topic, but the many different freeze situations in FE make it quite worrying...Really hope they will be fixed very soon. I can understand why many keep using Update 6, because it's currently the most stable one to use...

Re: Another system freeze
I originally had a an SFS\02 boot partition for FE but switched when the make command was VERY slow when I boot from an SFS partition. I was doing some debugging and fixes with very large sources and got tired of waiting on long compiles. I'm going to switch back to SFS/02 and see if it affects the freezes I'm getting now. I'll switch one of my alternate partitions to FFS and switch to that if I need to compile.tonyw wrote:There is a long-known problem with FFS that makes it crash if you try to write to a write-protected volume. I should add that I didn't have all these freeze issues with Update6 and think something has gone with FE.

@Xenic
If you still have a backup of your Update 6 setup, then it can be a good idea to turn back to Update 6 and rather wait until the numberous bugs are fixed in FE.
I'm actually considering doing the same...
