SFS2 or JXFS for Work partition?

Post by HKvalhe »

Currently, my only partition that is using JXFS is the Work partition. All 3 others like AmigaOS (SYS) partition, Diverse and Spill are using SFS2 file system. AmigaOS is bootable.

My question is. Should Work partition be SFS2 or JXFS-formatted?

Another question, HKvalhe, why do you use JXFS instead of SFS2 ?

What are the advantages of JXFS ?

Yeah, i get your point. So now my whole internal SSD harddrive is using SFS2 for all 4 partitions. JXFS was supposed to be the best choice. It seems that it was made by mistake. So that would mean that SFS2 is actually the BEST choice.

JXFS is faster because it uses the newest APIs BUT (this is a big one) only if the software doesn't play tricks with DOS packets and such. Thus, any older software will likely fail to work properly on JXFS and it should only be used for "modern" PPC software and never for any 68k stuff in my experience.

In general, SFS2 is much more compatible and should be good enough for most people.

Thank you for your reply,
I don't use JXFS, I asked just to know why HKvalhe wanted to much to use this filesystem.

Thank you kindly for your explanation, Ssolie :) I can't really explain why i was using JXFS. Probably because of the new stuffs being PPC-native. But because we still have a lot of stuffs relying on the old 68k and for legacy games and software, SFS2 has to be used because it is a perfect balance in compatibility and speed.

Actually, i find both SFS2 and JXFS quite equal in speed to each other. It seems to be very little difference in speed between them. It's an interesting observation.

My impression of JXFS as it stands now it that it should probably NEVER have been made. It seems that JXFS turnt out to be unneccessary and a waste of time.

It is possible to update the SFS2 so that it becomes faster somehow? Like the way JXFS was meant to be, but with compatibility in mind?

I guess i was interested in JXFS because it was brand new and to be the fastest, but it's also not the most compatible one.

Well, now my 4 partitions on my internal SSD HDD, which are AmigaOS SYS partition, Work, Diverse and Spill, are now all using SFS2 instead of JXFS. :)

Buffers are now 2000 and Max Transfer is 7FFFFFFF ;)

In casual observation, things like hard drive RPM, hard drive buffer size, transfer speed and bus speed overshadow the speeds of given file systems; granted FFS is slow compared to the others, but it is also repairable.
