Strange commercial DVD behaviours for me on x1000 - SOLVED

Post by zzd10h »

Hi,
I have a problem (with a solution for once) with some commercial DVD (just tested 2)
I can't read them on my X1000 under amigaOS4 but they are OK on my Pegasos2 (AmigaOS4, too)
I use same DVPlayer, libdvdcss, avcodec to read them on both computer... Ok, it's a third party software, avcodec.library...

The fact is that, on x1000 these commercial movies can''t play under OS4 with DVPlayer

http://zzd10h.amiga-ng.org/X1000/DVD_X1000_KO.jpg

But works well under VLC MintPPC on the same x1000... Therefore the DVD drive works well.

And they are working well, too, on my Pegasos2 under OS4 (dvplayer).

To test, just for fun, I have plugged the peg2 IDE DVD drive to the x1000 IDE slot and the DVDs are working now ! I can read these DVD on my x1000 with the peg2 ide dvd drive...

I know that the SATA DVD drive of my X1000 is not faulty, normal DVD are working,
And commercials DVD are working under linux MintPPC.
but under AmigaOS4 ?...

is somebody notice this problem before ?

PS: the IDE drive is a NEC ND-3550A, this one works well on my x1000, are the IDE drivers the Benefactor for me, and the sata drivers the culprits?

I will try to find one of this ND-3550A for my X1000

Have you checked the obvious...are the DVPlayer versions exactly the same on both Amigas?

Yes, same registered DVplayer.
As I said, it works fine with a IDE DVD drive.
Not a problem, because I have the solution, but just to inform

No. I can play commercial DVDs (including encrypted ones) using DvPlayer on my A1-X1000 using the SATA DVD drive. I did have to install DvPlayer's DVD CSS plugin, but it worked just fine. I think that my SATA DVD drive is the same as the one that ships with A1-X1000s. The drive that I have is:
Samsung Super-WriteMaster SH-S223C 22x Dual Layer Multi-Format (Black) SATA

I suggest that you download and install the DVD CSS plugin, and try again. That's just to make absolutely sure that you do, in fact, have it installed. BTW, does the DVD play using mplayer (on AmigaOS)? If so, then maybe it's time for the CSS plugin to be updated...

Thank for reply, Hans.
Yes, I have the right version of the dvd css plugin installed in the dvplayer dvdplugin.

I can say that because :
On the same x1000, I have unplugged the DVD SATA drive and plugged my old DVD IDE drive and the same DVD work very well.

Therefore, I can say that DVPlayer and CSS plugin are OK.

And the SATA DVD drive seems to work because it plays the same movie very well under MintPPC VLC player.

i have the same DVD drive than you.

MPlayer doesn't read these DVD, too (I just try with SATA drive)

But if you confirm that all is working fine for you on the same configuration,
I must have another problem somewhere...

Or, maybe you have an older version of the plugin that happens to work with your IDE drive, but not the SATA one. I still suggest downloading and installing the latest one, just to be 100% sure. It only takes a few minutes.

I just had a look at the screenshot that you posted, and that is clearly an avcodec.library error message. That suggests that it's a video decoding problem. Did all commercial DVDs fail? Or just the two that you mentioned in your first post. I tested it with two DVDs, which both worked.

Which version of the avcodec.library are you using? The old one? Or the latest one? If you're using that latest one, are you using the standard one? The altivec one? Or, the debug one? I'm using the old avcodec.library.

It's weird that your IDE drive has no trouble, but the SATA drive does. Maybe the IDE drive does a better job of correcting errors than the SATA one, while VLC on Linux has a more error tolerant video decoder.

Which version?

BTW, when you say "doesn't read these DVDs," do you mean "fails to start"? Or, is it more like "stops working part way through"? It's not clear.

@zzd10h

I just updated avcodec.library to the latest version (the altivec variant), and the DVDs still play fine. So, that can probably be ruled out as a contributing factor.

Hi Hans,
I have just redownloaded the libdvdcss and the altivec avcodec (I still had them but I have redownloaded them) .

avcodec.library 53.611 Build #2B07 (In libs drawer)
dvdvcd.plugin 51.4 (in DVPlayer dvdplugins drawer)

but the results are the same.

With MPlayer (MUI-Mplayer 1.0 (11.11.2010) Altivec version with cgx_wpa) I have a windowed grey screen and that's all.

I check 3 recents DVD (from 2012) and the results are always identical. I just have 3 recent DVD.

With old DVD (certainly without protection), DVPlayer is working fine even with the SATA drive (but not MPlayer, same grey screen)

You seem to be overlooking the different DVD drives on your X1000 & Pegasos. Specifically, I wonder whether your Peg's DVD drive has had it's region set (which is typically required by commercial DVDs), but your X1000's hasn't. You can check what your Peg's is set to, and set it on your X1000 if necessary using the following tool:
http://os4depot.net/index.php?function= ... ionset.lha

I always make my (LiteOn) DVD drives region-free (multi-region), before using them, so I'm not actually sure how DVPlayer will react to commercial DVDs in a drive with no region specified (or the wrong region).

Thank you ChrisH,
You are right, it was the problem.
The DVD of my Peg was region setted (region 2) but not my X1000 DVD drive (region none).

After to have region setted with regionset it works great with DVPlayer.

I didn't remember about these Region parameters.
Sorry for this false problem

And thank a lot.
