I am getting there.
The Ubuntu installer had the option of base install for Lubuntu and full install for Xbuntu so I decided to do the Xbuntu.
Have downloaded the Lubuntu installer so I have to modify the ramdisk.
EDIT: I see that I can do a base install of Lubunto from the first Ubuntu installer then
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop to install

But Lubuntu is faster than Xubuntu.

To install Lubuntu arrow down to the “Ubuntu with LXDE Desktop” option and press the space bar to mark the
option. Now press return to continue.

Excellent! Does it work with your new kernel? Could you write installation instructions for Lubuntu 12.04.3?

I don't know if I understand it right. The Sam440ep-flex isn't powerful enough for Lubuntu 12.04.3? Thank you für your Ubuntu attempts. This is a very interesting thread.

Lubuntu works ok. The regular Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 is too much for the Sam440ep.
