@Hypex
wow congratulations. when you write download, is it apt download or is it manual download?
Thanks. It is apt download. I kept doing the dist-upgrade until it managed to install enough packages from the cache. I removed wireless-regdb but it got stuck on lsvpd.

Thanks! BTW, during my Bionic distraction I tested kernel 6.15.0-RC1. Works fine on both Xenial and Bionic so far. :-)

Hi guys.

An issue I have noticed is that updating can fail because the lsvpd package fails to configure and upsets the whole process. This can break packages like ubuntu-standard that depend on lsvpd. The problem has been known since at least on Yakkety. The problem was fixed upstream but the packages included in this Bionic update aren't fully up to date. Even though the project was rather recent. So I compiled a newer lsvpd package which works and fixes broken packages depending on it.

hi
After several attempts, I managed to do a full installation. When I logged out to choose another desktop, I realized that something was wrong.
Lighrdm does not work, I can use ctrl alt f2 and log in but I can't find the problem.
I have also tried using lxdm instead of lightdm but it also fails. There are many packages that I cannot install due to errors.
Ubuntu18 booterfint on 6.12.22 but without a graphical desktop.
Even though I have inserted the modules folder in /lib/modules the system still complains during startup about missing modules

Thanks for your report. I also found myself in a situation where packages could not install. I was playing around with some desktop packages. Somehow I removed gnome-session-flashback and gnome-flashback. But cannot reinstall it now as the depends have gone missing. Might need to force downgrade to reinstall it. Lightdm should be installed. But my login screen did still show a Xenial background image. Need to check if I can change manager. Right now I just get login screen. But logging in doesn't even try to load desktop. The login screen just sits there. Usually with a desktop issue it tries to load up a desktop and loops back on fail. While the desktop loaded up after I got it all updated it was faulty. At least on mine it was as the top panel was missing user widget with log out options. So had to "shell out" of the system. Will need to track down any error logs.

hi
New attempt.
This time I have used Ubuntu 17 remix to upgrade to ubuntu18.
I haveonly installed packages with synaptic.
I only chose files from the menu item( installed (can be updated))
If the package wants to mess up I chose not to update. I installed a little over 1000 packages, a few were from other groups.
The upgrade is not yet finished but all programs that have been updated work. Libreoffice, mate-desktop, gimp, inkscape. all programs from mate such as pluma and caja. New language files. and much more.
after restarting the network worked but I had an error with (cant resolve host sourceforge.net) I inserted nameserver 192.168.0.1 in etc/resolve.conf and in etc/resolve.d/base and restarted the network. It worked. Unfortunately my x1000 is annoying by shutting down without warning, so I have to wait to move on.
