I've downloaded Chimera live installer. I haven't downloaded root image yet. Unfortunately the installer is in some incompatible CD format. Nothing on Linux seems to know what it is except the Archive Manager could open it. It looks like a HFS+ Mac CD but no HFS tools can open it. Given they are producing a Linux CD and not an OSX CD I don't know why they have made it so hard to open it in Linux. I realise they are targeting Macs but it's the first PPC Mac CD image I couldn't open! You shouldn't need a Mac just to open a CD image

I have reinstalled Chimera 64 again and started over.
This time a little more prepared
Gnome does not work on my x1000.
Plasma desktop only works partially
xfce4 works fine and if I install plasma desktop then I can open
plasma programs from xfce.
I have had big problems with lack of rights.
Could not open a usb drive. Several settings cannot be changed, such as printer setup.
I found out that sudo is called doas and it has helped a little.
Root cannot log in via graphical login but if I open a terminal login via ctrl alt f2 then I can mount my drives from there.
Once the drive has been mounted once I can open without difficulty next time
I found out that the segmentation errors I got were due to the fact that I did not start the network with the same ones. Thanks to Hypex who mentioned it as a possibility.

That sounds like a mix of things there in Chimera.

It could pass for BSD Unix. Which can be a challenge to install a working desktop on as it's not designed to be one so system needs all kinds of changes and packages installed. But mostly, because of doas, which is quirky to see in a Linux distro as it's the Unix answer to sudo. Unix has sudo also but doas is more common.

Debian used to be annoying with removable storage as you needed to keep giving root permission when inserting a drive.

I recall graphical login doesn't like root user. So that may not work; as intended, so to speak. Usually trying to do a startx fails as root. You can usually open folders as root on a desktop but in use some things are faulty like trash can. Best to login as user and start graphical login. Especially with system way to start Xorg, what ever Chimera uses as system daemon.

The missing network crashing components tends to be getting common now.

I have now also got chimera 32 running, but there are also problems with polkit permissions here.
Even something like opening a usb drive and copying a file over is problematic. I have configured doas to give me a little more permissions but that is not enough. Doas cannot start a file manager in root mode. Plasma desktop also only works half as well. I get a search bar where I can search for programs and then start them, but there is no desktop. I can log in to gnome but can't do anything when you are in, I have to go into a terminal behind and stop sddm.

So I find the Chimera site to be quirky. It has a nice look but the download section is just a dump off all files. Which makes it look sloppy.

I downloaded the Chimera root image but noticed it's too small. It just looks like a base system with no desktop components. I expected a desktop variant but that's only available in the installer.

While it's definitely good to have these modern distros available for PowerPC I find they are still somewhat stuck in the past. They only produce installers for old Macs. Debian is the same but their installer can be easily booted from the ramdisk. I wonder if these Mac installers even work on a Raptor? We might just be a small crowd but I think it would be good idea to include support for X1000, X5000, Blackbird and Talos. Even just as a net installer. It would be more work but they could expand the user base beyond old Macs and emulators. And in the least just produce an installer image or ISO that's portable across platforms.

There was a very big update on Chimera 64 today. Afterwards I was able to log in to the plasma desktop and it worked. Enlightenment also works.
Gnome does not work.
There are many programs that do not work. LibreOffice starts and then crashes.
There are still problems with permissions that make it impossible, for example, to install a printer and mount drives.
I think it seems like they are working hard to fix errors.
