I've been on onboard Ethernet forever and I still get these hangs as described above: occasionally the screen freezes with the title bar visible and just a white background. Sometimes a reboot is not enough. I turn off my x5000 completely, wait a few seconds, turn it back on and it works again.
I thought the NGFS file system might be the cause. This system caused me HUGE problems

. So I reformatted everything to SFS2, which is much more reliable... except that the white screen reappears from time to time

.
I see also that kind of boot issue regularly... Trying to get exact info about it is difficult as it dissappears if I use the debug kernel! I suspect it is connected to the loading of X-Dock during the boot process.
You could try to disable X-Dock in WBstartup (or in startup-sequence/user-startup scripts if you have yourself changed it to boot from there), and see what happens. You can leave the icon of X-Dock on desktop and start it manually after WB has been loaded.
There seems to be also an other type of boot freezing, which happens soon after the kickstart modules has been loaded, before WB has started to load. I suspect this is somehow related to the graphics board and graphics.library.
