Hi All,
The final version of kernel
4.9 has been released.
Many thanks to all testers for testing the alphas and release candidates. A special thank you to Darren for the patches and for the part integration of the Nemo board into the official kernel source code.
I started the kernel 4.9 cross compiling and testing in Sacramento. I released 6 alphas there. Darren's patches were added to the official kernel source code in this time. At the AmiWest I reported about Darren's Nemo integration. I continued the cross compiling and testing in San Francisco. I released 2 alphas and the first release candidate there. After the U.S. trip I tested all cross compiled kernels. Unfortunately
pas_shutdown and
pas_restart didn't work anymore. I released the RC2 in Germany and the problems with
pas_shutdown and
pas_restart do not exist anymore. Since the alpha5 we saw no kernel boot messages during the boot anymore. I added
console=tty0 to the boot arguments (bootargs) then I was able see the kernel boot messages. That means, the kernel boot messages were not sent to tty0 by default. I found the problematic commit and I created a patch. I posted the problem with not displaying the kernel boot messages on the Linuxppc-dev mailing list. The Linux PPC devs solved the problem and we were able to release the RC5 without the additional patch. We had some problems with the
R7-250X and the
AMDGPU driver. I compiled the RC6 without the AMDGPU support and this solved the problem. Additionally we had some problems with the
R9 270X as well. Darren figured out that the
pitcairn_k_smc.bin firmware is missing in the kernel config. I updated all firmwares and I added the firmware
pitcairn_k_smc.bin to the kernel config. After that the
R9 270X worked again.
OK, here is the final version of kernel
4.9.
