I frequently see these requests for testing a new kernel, but I'm not sure what "test" means. Is there something written up somewhere about what to do?

I have just now booted Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with kernel 4.1 to see if I could, but I don't imagine that counts as testing. I'm unaware of any difference from kernel 4.0, or even 3.14 for that matter...

The kernel development is very fast. It means we have to test new kernels to modify our Nemo patch. New kernels provide support for new hardware and security fixes. Additionally new kernels have a lot of bug fixes, new features, and improvements.
Test means to boot the new kernel and look how it works. You can test audio/sound, 3D acceleration, network, hardware access etc.

Just for testing, it works under Ubuntu 15.04.

Nevertheless, I don't use Linux anymore.
STK was my main occupancy under LinuxPPC and now with a R7-250X GFX card...
