hi.
i was not able to find good documentation about the "formatcdrw" utilitiy and what is required to make it work.
i think the dosdrivers in storage are required (CDRW, ...) but how?
can i use a DVD-RAM with that? is this possible? how?
i have one here and wanted to check.
thanks and regards
michael

Re: dvd-ram
IIRC, just move the ones you need to DEVS:DOSDrivers and reboot.MichaelMerkel wrote:i think the dosdrivers in storage are required (CDRW, ...) but how?
I don't think a DVD-RAM needs any formatting, it already contains its filesystem. It's been a long time since I tried myself, but I think I just activated the DOSDriver (moved it to DEVS:DOSDrivers and rebooted), and was able to read and write at once.can i use a DVD-RAM with that? is this possible? how?
Best regards,
Niels

in another forum i found that dvd+rw seems to be correct...
maybe my dvd-ram is broken - need to cross check.I don't think a DVD-RAM needs any formatting, it already contains its filesystem. i was able to "see" it in the cdrw formatter. but could neither format it nor write smth to it as i get read/write errors. it even is shown as readonly. hmm...
will see what our win machine tells me about it later.
regards...

Re: dvd-ram
seems my dvdram is broken.
on windows i could not completely format it - got an error after some seconds.
i could write smth on it though - but let's face it. i'll check for a new one and then test again.
thanks and regards...

Re: dvd-ram
I would like use to use DVD-RAM as well on my A1, never figured out how to.
Not just as mass storage, but would like to be able to play DVD-RAM videos recorded on my Panasonic recorder.
I think we're lacking a suitable dosdriver. Perhaps Niels has one that was never officially released?

Re: dvd-ram
If i remember correctly dvd-ram on os4 will use sfs/00, while the rest of the world is using udf. so you can only use it for backups.
Re: dvd-ram
Hey guys,
I've been using DVD-RAM's for years on AmigaOS for backups and file
transfers.
You just need to mount the DVD+RW mount file before inserting the disk.
Yes, the disks come UDF formatted, but that leaves them as "read-only" on
AmigaOS (just like on OSX).
To be able to write to the disk, you select the unformatted DVD+RW icon
that also appears and quick format it. Then any new Amiga will also be
able to read & write to the disk.
As for lesser platforms, I have no idea.
Good luck,
PJS

Re: dvd-ram
I have never been able to mount DVD+RW (or DVD-RW), because Mount says there isn't enough memory. I tried to decrease buffers but it doesn't help.

Re: dvd-ram
I seem to remember that "not enough memory" message occurs when the wrong device/unit are selected in the icon. The error message is bogus.
cheers

Re: dvd-ram
Thanks PJS and tonyw too... I never thought to use "dvd+rw" dosdriver before and that is why it didn't even have the correct tooltypes.
edit: I could write about 7 MiB onto the disk with SFS before it started spewing read errors. This happened both with PIO and UDMA transfer. Looks like incompatible!
