Wireless Canon Pixma MP620 and NetPrinterPrefs?

Post by HKvalhe »

Came through a small article in my AmigaOS group on Facebook, where a user seems to successfully have managed to install NetPrinterPrefs from Aminet, to connect a wireless HP printer to his Amiga.

As i understand, this can work for me as well, if i do the following?

1. Downloading NetPrinterPrefs v1.15 from Aminet (this could be ported to PPC for AmigaOS4, as it is 68k based) and install it in SYS:Prefs
2. Run NetPrinterPrefs and set up my Canon Pixma MP620 to run wirelessly, by giving the wireless IP address of my AirLink AC5000 router
3. Using "netprinter.device" and giving the right unit from the printer, if i understand correctly, and ensure everything runs correctly
4. Printing out a test from AmigaOS 4.1 Update 6 and see if everything was successful

I suppose these are what i should do, is that correct? Just need to know. I'm giving it a test this weekend, so hopefully it should be a success. Fingers crossed :)

UPDATE: While NetPrinter is very handy, i could not find any driver for Canon Pixma MP620 to use, not even wirelessy. The Linux and Mac version of TurboPrint, which are more modern, both have drivers for just about all printers of today, including the Canon Pixma MP620. Unfortunately, the old Amiga version of TurboPrint doesn't.

Theoretically, it should be possible to port the Linux version of TurboPrint to Amiga or either work on a completely new printer support for AmigaOS4, that also uses the NetPrinter in some way by locating the "netprinter.device" from SYS:DEVS. This should be possible. The question is rather HOW can all this be done?

For now, i have no choice but to forget about this printer until a solution is in place.

Unless Canon have completely re-written their protocols (not impossible) This driver should give you very basic 300x300 and 600x600 printouts. (density 1 & 2) They will not match Turboprint/Window/Mac in quality, Give it a try and let me know.

Hi there. I tried that driver, but it didn't work with Canon Pixma MP620. Not even wireless through NetPrinter. I tried just about everything. I tried to print a PDF document from AmiPDF, and i tried choosing PDF and netprinter.device to print. I even tried the NETPAR from DEVS:DOSDrivers after typing in the toolstype and turning it into a mounted device. That didn't help either. I'm not even sure what to do. I'm not quite familiar with net printers.

Further on, there is a huge difference in printer support in the Linux and Mac version of TurboPrint vs Amiga version of TurboPrint. Linux and Mac version of TurboPrint support several Canon printers, including the Canon Pixma MP range, which is also the Canon Pixma MP620. The old Amiga version of TurboPrint does NOT support the Pixma MP range as the Canon Pixma MP620. If that was the case, i could easily use the MP620 with the Amiga, even wireless.

I even tried printing from AmiCygnix and tried XSane with the printer, but no luck.

On a PC and Mac, i assume the net printer should be automatically connected to that computer through its' wireless IP address, which is not the case in the Amiga. AmigaOS's printer system is NOT up to date. Far from it.

Still, i hope there is a solution or a solution under work.

We are painfully aware of this.

Windows has a massive team of developers working on their printing system. Mac uses CUPS and you can see the compressed archive for version 1.7.1 is just 8.3 MB in size. If anybody thinks printing is easy these days you are dead wrong.

What we need is some middle of the road solution. I would hope a 3rd party could take on such a project and maybe even make a few bucks along the way. I would love to work with a 3rd party to make it happen.

In the mean time, I always recommend using a PostScript-based printer. They cost more but they work with every platform on the planet and you don't need to wait for any drivers to use it.

I'm aware that working on printer support is not easy, especially when being a small team. Hmmm, PostScript you say. I could try.

I don't expect anything to happen anytime soon. As long as there is a plan for such thing, then i am happy about it.

Re: Wireless Canon Pixma MP620 and NetPrinterPrefs?

I have now managed to get an IPV4 address for my Canon Pixma MP620 printer, so the rest should be fairly easy.

The only thing is that one of 2 things are only possible to be able to print from my printer.

1. A Canon Pixma MP620 driver for AmigaOS4 (which is not the case)
2. A way to use PostScript and the NetPrinter to get the printer to print with the Amiga

My question is now, HOW do i get my printer to print from the Amiga now that a wireless IPV4 address for it is given? And Canon Pixma MP620 is probably NOT a Postscript printer, right?
