NotePad Save option

I noticed NotePad does not check if a file already exists prior to saving.

1) If you open NotePad by clicking on AmiDock, type in some random chars,
2) then save to RAM:test.txt
3) repeat 1) and 2) again but "accidentally" click on RAM:test.txt or enter RAM:test.txt in the string-gadget

it just overwrites.

Now, if you do 1) but try to "Save as.." RAM:test.txt, a requester appears asking if you want to overwrite.
IMHO it should ask the same when one clicks on "Save" too.
Or am I being to over-precautious?

I accidentally deleted S:Startup-Sequence... :,-(

Ouch - you are absolutely right.

I have now made a BZ entry for this, and I definitely don't think you are over-precautious.

This is not the behaviour one would normally expect from a text editor.

Maybe you too fast:

I checked for sake of test notepad on winxp (sure not the thing on which we rely, but), and there is acts the same 1:1 : when you press "save" it overwrite the exiting file , but when "save as" it ask for name, and then when choice that file, it ask "overwrite or not". I.e. the same as our notepad on os4. Dunno through if it right or not, but at least react the same.

Maybe that overwriting is even good to have, because you know that when you press save, you no need to press anything else, it just saves right now. It also good to make a save of your work: you type text, and then just press "amiga+s" and it saves, without needs to boring with asl-requester. i.e. fast and productive work. But if you want it, then you choice "save as". Imho logical and right ..

Specifically I think it would be good if it asks the first time, when creating a file. After that, of course there is no need to ask if it overwrites...

they all check prior first saving, unlike... Microsoft XP Edit(?).. mmh

Well, whatever then. I'll try to not make mistakes next time.

edit: And DeluxePaint 3 and IV check before overwriting too (A2000)

I don't use NotePad (for many reasons, this is just one more). I always get my hands on NotePad++ as soon as possible on any Windows system I have to use.

So you may be right, but as you also note, Windows NotePad is not an example to follow.

Every other editor I can remember using on any platform (like many other types of applications) does it the way I also am requesting our NotePad to do.

The "correct" way would also not bother you with a file requester, just a "File exists. Overwrite? OK/Cancel" type of requester, which you can respond to with a key, and only the first time.

That's not how I usually see it done in other, "mainstream", editors. If a new file hasn't been saved yet, and thus its name (seen on the tab or window border) is still "new 1", "Unnamed 1" or similar, they just treat Save like Save As.

No, that would be an incorrect and confusing visual cue - it would suggest that the file cannot be saved.

If a new file hasn't been saved yet, /.../, they just treat Save like Save As.

As long as you're filing a report for NotePad, I would point out that are some Shell arguments like TOOLBAR and AUTOINDENT that do nothing.
