I have only just started running into this issue myself on my own system.

I'll be packing and restoring everything as it seems to be only my Work partition.

It has not affected any others and is 1 of 3 partitions formatted as SFS2 which I use, I have the impression it is size related in some
way which is yet to make sense.

Well long ago i solved with a proper quick format and reinstallation of the involved partition that was created with SFS 1.289, after that i never experience any other issue so i'm pretty sure there were some glitch (i wrongly called "incompatibility") during the switching from SFS 1.289 to 1.290

Even if a bit annooying at this point my suggest is to do a proper backup of your problematic partition, then make a quick format and finally re-copy oll your backupped files above the fresh partition ;)

I am having the same problem just trying to make a clean backup...

I had to buy a new HDD because of the sizing involved

EDIT:
re-arranged the partitioning now I have another 500GB drive installed (surprisingly cheap around here)

The new layout is "Belxjander", "Linux", Swap & "Work" partitions on the main drive.

and I partitioned the 500GB drive as a single JXFS partition for the size of the entire drive
Which is what I will convert the first 500GB drive into with reiserfs instead of JXFS
