Amiga RKM...

Post by Nibunnoichi »

Hello,

i don't know if i'm allowed to post such a topic here, so forgive me if i'm doing a mess with my first post in this forum... :?
As for the subject: the printed RKM books are quite hard to find at honest prices. I know that on the Developer's CD there are electronic copies of them. Now the questions:
1. are the copies on the CD more up to date than the printed books?
2. are they complete? (i.e. all chapters from all books?)
3. is the CD still worth buying now that Hyperion is putting everything on the wiki?

Thank you!

Here are my answers:
1. nope
2. nope
3. sort of

We have been slowly merging all the information from the DevCD (e.g. AmigaMail) into the wiki but it is a long difficult process as you can imagine. My hope is more people will use the wiki first and then complain when they find something wrong/missing on there so we can focus on those areas developers need most.

In other words, I would rather hear your feedback regarding what is missing on the wiki so we can try to fix it.

(Try to be as specific as possible to help us focus)

Thank you for replying :)
I don't have complaints ATM... it's just that i'd like to start a complete, deep reading and i want to do it on the most complete source (which, as i understand, actually is the CD, at least price-wise vs. the Books)
Up to now, whenewer i searched something on the wiki, it was there, so thank you for that

I bet you could search for RKM 3rd Edition which covers Workbench 2.04 at least. Yes, the prices are high for such books (they are quite heavy too), but you could try AmiBay for a decent price.

The wiki contains every RKRM now including the Style Guide and AmigaDOS manual. There is no longer any need for the paper versions unless you plan to code for pre-4.0 versions of the operating system.

The AmigaMail articles were published to expand upon what was in the printed books. The DevCon materials also expanded upon the printed books. Our goal is to merge all of that information into the wiki (which already has all the printed books) and create the ultimate reference.

The printed books are only really useful as a brief source of heat in your fireplace now... ;)
