I ran into problems using screenmode prefs, trying to use the 'autodetect modes' possibility.
When the monitor does not respond to DDC requests you are sruck with a few PAL modes, and the 'monitor' tab does not work any more (to uncheck the 'aitodetect modes' option.
The latter should remain possible or the previous settings should be saved and restored imho that is.
Screenmode prefs
Re: Screenmode prefs
It would help if you could provide information about what Amiga system you are using, what version of AmigaOS you run and weither you are using onboard GFX or a graphic card and what type of graphic board it is? These informations are needed so that it's easier to locate the source to the problem, then work on a solution.JosDuchIt wrote:I ran into problems using screenmode prefs, trying to use the 'autodetect modes' possibility.

2) Click once on your monitor file
3) Pull-Down Menu --> Information
4) Icon Tab
5) Scroll down to DDCMODE
6) Put that line between parentheses, like so (DDCMODE=All)
7) Save
8) Reboot
9) Open Screenmode prefs and change to your hearts desire
edit:
Rereading your post makes me think you already know that and only asks for a solution if it goes wrong

I don't think that is possible as the OS would have to check if DDC is supported by your monitor and i don't think its worth to implement such thing for the few monitors out there not playing by the rules...probably

Re: Screenmode prefs
It's not just a matter of whether the monitor supports DDC. It is also important to know how the monitor is connected. Some combinations of cables, ports and adapters (e.g. VGA->DVI) cannot transfer the DDC info.Raziel wrote:Rereading your post makes me think you already know that and only asks for a solution if it goes wrong

Nevertheless the GUI should not allow to end up in a dead end.
Re: Screenmode prefs
I am getting old: I forgot i started this thread allready and was going to 'restart it'
My system is a standard SAM440ep. And indeed it is the DVI to VGA adapter used that is the cullprit.
I was able to make things work again (allready when i posted the initial message by copying the monitor file from a OS4 update 5 back up) but i am glad to know what you can do without a backup (the icon's tooltype to change)
But indeed i agree to
Since then i have bought a LCD which is connected directly from the DVI connector and it works OK, sort of - the highest
mode detected 1920x1080 RGB16 shows flickering .
Maybe i'll go for a direct VGA to the card's 16 pin header connection strip. ACube sells them but with the transportation costs i will look for a local solution.
I like the wider screeen for a number of tasks (programming, use of directory manager), for others (writing)i would prefer to use the higher CR monitor
For switching from one monitor to an other, i have to change the preferences of all my predefined custom screens. Is there a solution to simplify this ?
I can clone & rename the existing 'monitor' in Devs/monitor's and choose to not 'autodetect' the modes of my CR monitor
(mysettings previous setting with my CR monitor)
Question: will the OS test in sequence all monitors till it gets a response or how does this work?
I'll test this later, but of course the question is broader: haw can one link the wanted custom screen settings to a monitor?

Re: Screenmode prefs
Add "+RB" to the screen mode, that should make it stable. You're working on the limit of what the 440ep DVI can handle, but with +RB, I have seen it work nicely (used it on my 42" TV some time ago).JosDuchIt wrote:Since then i have bought a LCD which is connected directly from the DVI connector and it works OK, sort of - the highest

Use Workbench for everything? For switching from one monitor to an other, i have to change the preferences of all my predefined custom screens. Is there a solution to simplify this ?

Re: Screenmode prefs
Yes, why didn't i think of thatUse Workbench for everything?

I did try adding the +RB tot the 1920x1080 mode in the monitor's tooltype and it worked OK.
A 1920x1080 ARGB 32 even appears now too and works OK too. Thanks.
It does not solve the monitor switching problem though.

Re: Screenmode prefs
On a more serious note, though, maybe you could define all your custom screens in the Screens prefs (if you haven't already), then it should just be a matter of having two saved prefs files for that and switch between them? I'm not sure about this, I really don't use custom screens much myself, but prefer having everything on (a big) WB.JosDuchIt wrote:Yes, why didn't i think of thatUse Workbench for everything?)

Re: Screenmode prefs
Hi Niels,
i looked closer at how i could do it. Objective: when i change the physical monitor, MuiOWB, CED, AmiPDF, ... should open (when called) on their own public custom screen. So i will need for each of them 2 screens defined with screens prefs appropriate for the 2 monitors. In the launching of such an application the system ( a script) should be able to detect what monitor is present, then select the appropriately defined application screen. At least the system should detect on what resolution Workbench is opening. This is where i am presently stuck. I am looking for some Dos, (arexx) command that can provide this info.
I can imagine better solutions the OS helping a bit: attaching screens (with same name) directly to a monitor.
Screenmode Prefs permits to define more than one monitor, so that would be the logical thing to do.
In fact this is what i hoped for.
