Shame on you......;-)

The next version of the Installation guide will include instruction for a beta version on Fedora 17 for PowerPC64 and a Live USB Flash drive version of MintPPC 11

Okay, I am ready to copy the Linux kernel files to my Compact Flash card and give installing Linux on my X1000 a shot. I haven't read the latest version of the Linux guide for the X1000, so I don't know what the guide includes. Does it include instructions on how to do multiple Linux installs on a separate dedicated SATA hard drive, just for Linux, if I create separate partitions for each flavor of Linux I want to test before I decide which one I like most?

I guess the guide will explain to me how to set up the Compact Flash for multiple Linux installations, but if it doesn't, could you give me a tip on how you have your CF setup Trevor? If you don't have any experimental stuff, or confidential stuff on your CF card, could you email me a Zipped copy of it, and I will just use that instead of figuring out which kernels I need and copying only them to my CF card. I have downloaded all of the Linux kernels, so I should have everything I need already, unless there are new kernels that have been released in the last few weeks, since I downloaded everything.

AmigaDave,

I do not have my system set up this way now, but in the early days I did have both Debian Squeeze and Wheezy installed on my AmigaOS 4 HDD. I think I used Media Toolbox to set up the AmigaOS partitions and then repartitioned the rest of the disk with Gparted under Linux.

If I remember correctly, I had to choose the manual Linux partitition set up option. I also think there is a restriction on the maxium number of primary partitions. However don't hold me to this. ;-) The following guide might prove useful?

http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2011/09/18/gu ... -in-linux/

For simplicity I now use an IDE HDD carrier and have a selection of IDE drives with various Linux disros installed for testing purposes .(Wheezy, Squeeze, Fedora) . I also have full Linux distros installed on 2 SATA HDD's. (Ubuntu & MintPPC) At some point I will rationalise the setup.

I'm also experimenting with the Live MintPPC USB flash drive installation created by Pat Wall and have installed this to a selection of USB flash drives and USB HDDs.

Interesting?

Isn't Linux slow if run from a USB stick?

I have a 250gb SATA drive that is empty (actually probably still has MacOSX on it from the dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac tower I took it out of, when I upgraded the PowerMac to a 1tb hdd). I thought I might be able to partition this 250gb SATA hard drive into 5 x 50gb partitions and maybe install 3 different Linux distributions on it with a common data & swap partitions that could be used by any of the 3 Linux distributions, but I am a complete Noob when it comes to Linux and maybe this idea is not even possible to do with Linus installations? I have only used the simplest versions of any Linux I have ever installed, and even then, I have only played around with Linux very little after the installations were set up. I use Linux so infrequently that I always forget the password to login and usually just give up on using it until I get the urge to install and look at a new version or a different distribution. Linux is not really for me yet, or vice versa, but I would like to get it setup on my X1000, so I can test it out and see if it has improved enough for the Noobs like me.

I will read the links you provided and read your guide that you have spent so much time adding to and perfecting. Thanks for all your work on that document and I look forward to seeing you again at the 2012 AmiWest Show. I have not read any announcement that has confirmed you are going yet, but maybe I just missed something you have written indicating that you will be at AmiWest this year.

Yes, there it's no trouble with that.
I have 3 sata disk.
1. only Amiga
2. 1 amiga partition, 1 mac partition, 1 with fast file system two mount from linux
and two linux partions with Debian and Mint
3. 2 partions one with ubuntu and one Reseveret to fedoro
All partitioned from the amiga side and all linux partitions formatted to ext4 from linux during installation.
It is possible to use 2 partitions in linux one for / (system) and one for /home (data) but I would never try to use the same /home for various Linux versions. I do not even know if it is possible without getting errors.
good luck

I've only had the trouble lately for some unknown reason. In the last week, The few weeks prior it was working fine. Anyway I am using an updated kernel and everything is working fine again. :-)

I just tried to install ubuntu => works...
but I cannot boot. => "Init: Failed to create pty – disabling logging for job" appears several times, machine seems to stop after a while.

I followed the Guide V 2.1 available on Hyperion website and used USB as suggested. The guide even states that this error will come up, but seems my bootprocess doesn't finish, like it was stated in the Guide. Any ideas ?

Thanx gerograph
