Hi everybody,
may be I did miss something. But since Update 5 mentions support of the R200 chip I wonder whether Radeon 8500 now is fully supported by AOS4.1?
Is this the case or is it still not (fully) supported? (I'm asking since I'm still looking for improvement possibilities of my Peg2. And hence newer Radeon HD cards Hans is creating drivers for are not working in Peg2 these old AGP models are all we can tweak around with inside Peg2!).
Thanks in advance and
Best Regards
Is Radeon 8500 now supported by AOS4.1 Update 5?
Re: Is Radeon 8500 now supported by AOS4.1 Update 5?
The RadeonHD driver is not a part of Update 5.
For access to the driver, you will need to talk with A-EON Technology.

Sorry, I didn't talk about the driver developed by Hans. I'm referring to this one here:
"Updated Radeon, R200 and Permedia2 Warp3D drivers." (see http://blog.hyperion-entertainment.biz/)
So is Radeon 8500 currently fully supported including Warp3D or not? If not will it be fully supported in future?

AFAIK, 3D is not supported by any cards above the Radeon 9250 (i.e. no HD cards). We need Gallium 3D + Mesa for that, which is slated for AmigaOS4.2.
If you need old 3D apps to work, then your current choices are either try Wazp3D (software 3D, so too slow for 3D games), or else free-up a PCI slot & get a Radeon 9xx0 card.
EDIT: OOOPS. I thought the author was talking about a Radeon *HD* 8500, not an ancient Radeon 8500 *blush*. An easy mistake to make, since quite a few people don't bother saying "HD" anyway.

To what I can read Reth is NOT asking for Hans driver (RadeonHD) he's just justifying why he needs support for Radeon 8500 by the fact Peg2 can't support newer cards.
So he's asking if current R200 driver (the one used for Radeon 92xx series) would support a Radeon 8500 card.

@ChrisH:
Thanks. I'm currently using a Radeon 9200pro recognized as 9250 AGP card in my Peg2. But since the R200 is described as supported including 3D I still wonder whether somebody definitely know whether the 8500 is supported including 3D or not. The 8500 is below the 9250 to be formal (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_R200 - BTW this article only mentions MorphOS but not AOS4!).

There's no official support for the 8500 presently.

Does that mean that it is not "Officially" supported, but it might work, or does that mean that the Radeon 8500 is not supported at all and the display will be distorted, scrambled, or have no display at all?Karlos wrote:There's no official support for the 8500 presently.
The Radeon 8500 and 9000Pro are much faster video cards than the 9200 and 9250, so if they are supported as all being the same family of GPU's, then the faster 8500 and 9000Pro would be more desireable to purchase, if they can be found and have enough VRAM on them, than the slower 9200 & 9250 siblings that were produced later and with more VRAM.

The Radeon 900 Pro is fully supported (2D and 3D), the 8500 is only supported in 2D and won't work in 3D. Go for A 9000 Pro (that's what i'm using and it's really faster than a 9250).

That is really strange because AFAIK, the 8500 and 9000Pro use the same exact GPU and are almost the same speed too, except the 8500 has more shaders, or some such difference.K-L wrote:The Radeon 900 Pro is fully supported (2D and 3D), the 8500 is only supported in 2D and won't work in 3D. It is really good to know that the 9000Pro is fully supported by both 2D and 3D with the OS4.x video driver.
Was your 9000Pro hard to find? How much VRAM does it have?
I am assuming that it is a Windows PCI video card that you are using, or do you have an OS4.x compatible computer that has an AGP slot? I am not familiar with the Pegasos2, so I don't know if they have AGP slot or not? They probably make PCI to AGP adapters, but I don't know anything about that, or how much such an adapter would slow down an AGP video card, since I think AGP is a faster bus than regular PCI is.
Thanks for this info regarding the Radeon 9000Pro cards.
