Smart Filesystem issue with Update 5

Post by samo79 »

I'm trying to copying some videos (avi files) from my "HD" partition to the Ram Disk: directory but i can't be able to finish the operation since the installation of the new Update 5

The progress bar seems stalled and after i while I got this error:
Smart Filesystem request

Volume 'HD' (DH1; sii3114ide.device, UNIT 0)

There was an error while accessing this volume:

General device failure.
The disk is in an unreadable format.

errorcode = 20
id_Command = 49152
io_Offset = 2098885632
io_Lenght = 65536
io_Actual = 6
The "HD" partition will all my data files was there since my previews OS4 installation (Update 4) while of course the main partition is the new one with the new version of the OS, any tips ?

Does it work OK if you go back to the old Update 4 partition?

I don't know as the old SYS: partition was "overwrited" with the new version of the OS (update 5) but as far as i remember i never saw such issue with any of the previews OS4's updates, i was always able to copy/paste any type of file from any partition X/Y to/from the Ram Disk:

So to me this is a new one

Is it possible the difference between revisions is causing a conflict

AmigaOS4.1.4 has v1.286 and AmigaOS4.1.5 has v1.29

Perhaps updating your partitions hold the key to normal functionality

@Slayer:
There is no change in partition format. An SFS partition will work just as well with either version.

@Samo79:
That error message has only appeared on my system just before an HD failed. I would start backing up everything and assume that it is about to fail.

I wouldn't have thought so either (there should be compatiability unless a major restructuring) I actually thought this was the same as you were suggesting but going in the other direction, I have no doubt if he did go back to a clean AOS4.1.4 installation that the problem would disappear otherwise there is more sinister user modifications which have been forgotten or hidden ;)

Once we have established the sensible we must always examine the improbable, especially when confronted with incomplete information :geek:

BUT, to be fair we must also entertain the idea that something else in the Update has caused this situation.

Of course this kind of stuff always happens to those types who are always deliberately trying to break AmigaOS. It's not a bad thing but it does cast some scrutiny on what happens behind the scenes on there harddrives!

Since Update 5, I also encounter on a regular basis FileSystems errors.

For example, I'm using TimberWolf on a FFS2 partition. TW has many accesses to the hard drive. With Update 4, I had no problem at all. Since Update 5, I get very often some read/write errors with this partition. I just click on "Retry" and it works again.

I'll make further tests wih my other partitions (SFS/0, SFS/2 and JXFS).

FWIW, I am using Sys:Kickstart/SmartFilesystem v1.290 without any problems, with both SFS/0 & SFS/2 partitions. So the cause may be some other difference between me & those having problems. I am using an X1000, don't know what others are using.

What system are you running? What CPU speed? Maybe there is a filesystem loading condition with heavy I/O from something like TW.

A bit strange as before (2 days ago) worked perfectly
Problem start only after the Update 5 installation so i can't believe it's an HD issue .. i will check as any other eventuality aniway
