What do I use my Amiga X1000 to?

Post by musa »

I would like to tell you what I use my x1000 to.
I started to get the network up and running so I could get filsharing
with my Ubuntu machine.
I had a little trouble getting amiga center to run stable and finally went over to
Smbmount,It just works every time . Can now pass files between my various systems.

Since I work a lot with joomla websites, the next I needed was the firefox extension firebug and it did very well install in Timber Woolf.
I can now move my website work from Ubuntu to my Amiga X1000. :D

I also had an interest in seeing what the E-UAE could perform on X1000 and I was not disappointed.
I can run a copy of my old Amiga 1200 hard drive with os3.9 in good speed. However, the icon update is slow. Programs such as Word, Works and Organize runs fine.
Even my Amos pro running fine.

Then of course I installed amicygnix with AbiWord and gimp as I know from Ubuntu.
Just missing a printer driver for my epsom stylus photo R240

For games, I got the following to work.
Bos Wars, Duke3d, Earth2140, Heretic 1, Hexen1, hexen 2, maxr, Nrtpanser, openredalert, doom (prboom), Quake,
ScummVM, statagus (warcraft2), wesnoth, Heretic2, quake2 and Exodus I can not get to work.
As you can see I have plenty to do on my X1000 :)
What do you use your X1000 to?
Thanks for a wonderful machine

Impressive list. :-)

As you are obviuously an experienced Unbuntu user you can also install Debian Squeeze on your AmigaONE X1000.

@musa
I could not live without TuneNet for playing music. (Yeah, an X1000 would be a bit overkill for only that!)

MUI-OWB is very good for web browsing, but Timberwolf seems to be getting very close to replacing it. (Mainly I miss copy & paste now.)

ClipDown + GetVideo are a pain to set-up, but very useful for watching YouTube videos with MUI-OWB. There is also a javascript "plug-in" for MUI-OWB, which is far less hassle to set-up, but is a bit more hassle to actually use.

I use my own PictureAlbum for browsing pictures.

The speed of the X1000 (and the extra memory) really helps with compiling the programs that I write for AmigaOS4, compared to my old Sam440 (512MB).

MUI-MPlayer (free) & DvPlayer (registered) are very nice for watching videos & DVDs, although the X1000's video drivers need optimising more before HD videos work well.

I don't find the time to actually use RunInUAE much these days, but I am still developing it. X1000 & Sam460 users should avoid installing the public release of RunInUAE, until I release "RunInUAE r7". The X1000's OS4 CD comes with a special version of "RunInUAE r6" that does work well on the X1000.

Quake2 works for me (in small screen size) - have you installed wazp3D, available from OS4 Depot?
I find ChocolateDoom (also on OS4 Depot) is far smoother and more playable than PrBoom.
ScummVM also works fine here - am playing Simon the Sorceror 2 atm.

Hello
@Trevor: As you are obviuously an experienced Unbuntu user you can also install Debian Squeeze on your AmigaONE X1000.
Yes I am ready to install debian but there is some surprise still in the amiga side to explore first :).

@ ChrisH I miss most bookmarks in Timberwolf but am very impressed with it.

@ SteveH Yes have installed warposemu without quake2 to start.

Have just discovered AAMP (localhost) and it is really good for building Websites ofline.
I will just wait to install debian until I've finished exploring the amiga side, but I have put a new hd into my x1000
(debian reddy) and downloaded the three dvds and manual, kernel and startup files.

Concrete works on AAMP but I haven't tested it fully, only installed it and tested very quickly.
Keep the party going !
