Does Compact Flash need formatting before install in X1000

Post by amigasociety »

Do I need to format the CF Card in MS-DOS FAT format before installing in my X1000 or is there an application in Amiga OS that will see the card to format?

I understand this CF card is not usable in Amiga OS yet but wondered if it can still be formatted for use to store Linux Kernals like Trevor did or other important things for future booting.

I believe CF flash cards are all FAT formatted? (but I could be wrong). Anyway, I used a couple of standard CF cards. The first one was 2GB and the second was 16GB (which was way overkill - and a waste of money).

To copy the kernels to my CF card I used a generic USB card reader attached to the AmigaONE X1000 (top front USB port). AmigaOS4 can read and write files to a CF card using a card reader. I then inserted the CF card with the various kernels into the internal CF port (with the machine powered down and unplugged).

What's the read-write speeds on these thing?

If they're fast and we get drivers for the CF port maybe you could stick the entire sys: onto a big 'un?
Near at hand is your forgetting all; near, too, all forgetting you.

I do believe they have a finite number of write or read/write operations, I think it'll be a long time before I personally trust anything outside a typical harddrive but things change so quickly I'm not above going with what makes sense although I resist doing things just because you can. Come to think of it, I live my entire life by that second statement; although I admit the criteria of this formula is a little biased at times LOL

I don't think they are that fast. From my experience loading Debian kernels from UB as opposed to the CF card in much faster.

Depends on the card you buy. Many quote a CD style speed rating. Most are PIO only, but some of the better ones support DMA. As with most things the more you pay, the better you get.

I don't believe there is any DMA on the local bus which the CF is attached to (but I could be wrong) so speed will always be quite low. (Compared to SATA anyway)
