Run X1000 front open or closed?

Post by amigasociety »

Just curious if you all run your X1000 with front door open or closed? Does the X1000 cool better with door open so fresh air in front and blows out back or does it not really matter?

I doubt it makes any difference, but I run my X1000 with the door closed. If the X1000 ever started showing signs of running hot there are plenty of extra vents that are currently blocked that could be opened up and additional fans could be installed to move the hot air out of the case.

I have not researched how hot the PA6T runs in the X1000, or if additional cooling is needed, but I doubt that A-Eon and AmigaKit would sell a computer that they are providing a warranty for without making sure that the design was adequately cooled. I don't think you have anything to worry about and can run your X1000 with the front door closed, or open without any risk.

If you have a look at the sides around the front door, you'll notice a grille running all the way down the sides. This provides plenty of space for air to be sucked into the case via the front fan(s). Whether the front door is open or closed probably makes almost no difference at all, even if you have two fans installed (I only have one at the front, with the second fan bay being empty).

While I don't own an official X1000 case, I believe Hans is right. I remember reading that the Fractal case design cleverly had ventillation holes placed such that they worked even when the door was closed (unlike other cases). Probably some other manufacturers are copy them now...

Normally closed, unless I need to inset a CD - which would be difficult with it closed ;-)

As already mentioned the side grills will allow flow through even with the door shut.

Mind you as with all my Amigas I often run it with one of the side panels off, handy for putting in my old A1 XE hard drive to copy files over !

Sounds interesting.

Of course I would need two caddies or I would end up doing the same ;-)

I don't think heat is an issue on the X1000. The PA Semi runs very cool, I think I've read that sometimes it is implemented without a fan in certain applications.
I believe the fan on top of it is only a precaution because of the value of the actual processor in case of a needed replacement.
I've never met an Amiga I did not like...
