Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't help (100mb or 1gb). Given that we all have the same hardware (more or less), I have to assume that it has something to do with my home network. For now, I am sticking with a second nic for Linux.

I installed a PCIe network card alongside the original PCI sound card that came with the machine and it seems to have solved my problem with sound stopping and/or the system freezing. Perhaps the solution is NOT to have more than one type of card (ie only 1 PCI and only 1 PCIe). I haven't tried ...
