Hi. With my previous android HTC phones i could see them as masstorage partitions in amigaos. It was android 2.2 and 2.3.

When i bought Samsung S2 (android 4) the masstorage was working but hidden in the menus. Now when i got me an Samsung S3 the UMS (mass-storage) is gone. Only way to make it work is thru MTP and PTP. Probably they want to be on the safe side to not corrupt the filesystem using UMS. Ofcourse if i root the phone i could install an app for that but im not into rooting.

PTP works often when connecting digital camera like Canon ixus with amigaos.
However with Samsung S2 and S3 the PTP window comes up but fails as it shows Camera Response Codes like:

Failed to open session -> Invalid parameter.

Now i dont know how its with HTC and other mobilephones running android 4.x. I believe its google removing support for mass-storage and not Samsung itself. But im no expert in this area.

The bad thing is i cant transfer files anymore x1000<->samsung s3. UMS is removed so no partitions showed. PTP/MTP fails. Will ther be MTP and better support for devices like samsung s3 ?. I would really like to be able to use x1000 to transfer files to it. Ok i can probably use FTP and other cloud services etc but its not the same.

Yes I get the same and it's a feature of the Samsung Mobiles. I have a Samsung SII which is recognised by Amiga OS4 when connected but not automatically available as there are no specific drivers. It does not work with Linux either. However, there is a Samsung Android app called "Kies Air" which allows you to connect to the phone and access all the files and data on the phone.

You just run the app which reports the phones "url" which you can enter into the Timberwolf web browser. The phone then asks your to approve the connection and you have access to all the data on the phone. The attached picture is from my AmigaONE X1000 running Timberwolf, connected to my Samsung II Android phone.

PS You have full access to the file system and you do NOT need to "root" your phone.

With ICS (android 4.x) the usb debbuging will not work as it will not show connect to USB from pulldown menu. So you have to go to

Settings->More... then choose usb utilities. Connect the usb cable and hit the "Connect storage to PC" button and it will work. You will see masstorage device in workbench

Thanks, that works fine with my Samsung SII phone. I'll see if it also works with my Samsung tablet.

Kicko, did this app work with your S3?

I am an iPhone 4 owner considering either updating to iPhone 5 or jump ship and get me a Samsung S3.

Would be nice to know this app Trevor found works with the new S3 too. He had an S2 so figured I would see if you ever purchased the app and saw if it worked.

You going to Amiwest this year. I think I saw you there last year.

I use Kies on my x1000 and SII. It kinda works but is limited as many of its features need java & or flash. Neither of which we have.

Yea same here. I only tried mui-owb but will try with timberwolf later. As you say some stuff needs java and flash. For example uploading/downloading one file is ok but if you want to download/upload several files then it needs java. I havent tried that much. It feels a bit slow, ofcourse it goes thru wifi. Another way is using FTP but i havent tried it yet. That would be easier for down/uploading files and probably faster. But using webbrowser and kies air is nice if you want to use a complete gui on the browser and see all in categories etc like on that picture. There is filemanagers with builtin ftp and other ways to control devices. So theres more possibilites. Its like a computer, just find the right tools.

Other ways are rooting but im not much into rooting. We already have alot of possibilites without it. However rooting seems very easy as seen on yotube videos. Rooting also enables use of ps3 controller, firewall and able to remove all apps, even the ones preinstalled, and able to use the firewall to stop some apps using the internet etc

So if you like changing your system and are a geek then yes go for android Ofcourse ios you can jailbreak but still more limited.

For the amiwest i havent been there. Its too far away from Sweden Some day maybe.

Alternative tool to "Kies Air" is "Airdroid". The looks and feeling is different as it looks more like an android pad device. Works in mui-OWB but on Timberwolf it logs in shows 100% but wont go further. Just stays showing 100%.

Tried a little bit and doesnt seem to need flash nor java. Watching videos needs quicktime. Easy to download files with mui-owb. Uploading doesnt seem to work, it says success but the file is zero bytes on phone. Also i couldnt see images in the photo dir. However i could see all my other pictures on other directories. More to try out. Looks small, easy and fast.

Try it maybe you like it. Would be nice if it would work with timberwolf. Too bad upload dont work with mui-owb

Updated with the new ptp.usbfd 53.8 (amigaos 4.1.6 with latest updates running on x1000)

Tried my samsung s3 (now with android 4.1.2) and got the same problem. It opens ptp window and outputs

"Failed to open session"
"-> Invalid parameter"

Tried with both mtp and mtp. Maybe the author knows this problem. Will/can it be fixed ?

I assume one of those should read "PTP". PTP is rubbish unless you're actually copying pictures. The PTP software on OS4 can be persuaded to show other files through the menus, but it is a miserable experience and still doesn't show everything, so is practically useless for this (I will say it works well with my camera though, when I was forced to use it as my card reader isn't working under OS4, but I digress).

The USB debugging trick to re-enable mass storage only works if the Android device doesn't have an "emulated" or virtual/merged filesystem. It won't work on the Nexus 7, for example.

I did a quick port of libmtp but it is so slow as to be unusable, as it scans every single directory on the device before it does anything (takes upwards of ten minutes on my Nexus 7). I was intending to find some sort of decent-ish file manager to put over the top of it but it's quicker to copy all the files up to a WebDAV server and then back down again. I've just chucked AirDroid on my tablet but I'm not near it to try it out yet.
