You need to download and burn the lubuntu alternate installer iso . will have to burn to DVD

once you reboot into the newly installed the base system install the Ubuntu-Mate from a terminal .
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-mate-core ubuntu-mate-desktop
the Ubuntu-Mate will be installed via the internet.
once installed reboot .
Another download for the initrd:
initrd-4.1.18-4.4.3_Lubuntu_16.04-ppc64-CD1.gz (I propose to download it with a right click on the link and then with the menu point "Save target as" or something like this.)
PLEASE PLEASE test the new initrd.

Gave the alternate install a try. No luck with GUI.
It does lightdm start/stop about 12 times then something about UTEMP and locks up everything.
So I installed again. This time I did not install even the base system stuff. De-selected it and finished the install.
It boots into text mode. Only very little was installed from the net.
I did apt install gcc-5, xz-util, patch, make, and ncurses stuff.
The 4.1.18 kernel works so far. I'm going to build 3.18.27 and see if that works with Lububtu and MintPPC.
Er.......After a nap.

The byte swap patch.
Is that for all cards or only the newer ones?
I'm using a barts and have had no problems with the earlier kernels.

I have now. Tried it with 4.1.18 and with 4.4.3, and even disconnected the SSD that Ubuntu has taken a dislike to, in case that was why it keeps hanging at "45%," examining disks in preparation for partitioning. All three new attempts stalled the same way.
I'll try to figure out how to do the "CD" install, but may not be smart enough anymore.

Hi All,
Spectre660 has recently released an img for a USB pen drive with a Ubuntu 16.04 base installation. This img is for all AmigaONEs.

@Spectre660: Many thanks for this img. It's really small.
I will try it out today. First, I will install the Lubuntu desktop. After that I will try to install the ubuntu MATE desktop. I am looking forward to my installation party.

Like I said before, I used the 4.1.18-4.4.3 ramdisk and the CD1 iso to install the base. That all works fine. However, as soon as I install the desktop stuff it all goes to hell with Ubuntu or Deb8. Once it locks up the only thing to do is power down.
Yes, I did the desktop with apt and with tasksel, no luck either way.

Erm not for all AmigaONEs. For Tabor and Cyrus . I dont found an entry with Nemo ?
