Now I wonder if some time in the future if that could be used again as btrfs evolves.

Why?
You're right. 'Own tools' Brain not working today. I just built 2 kernels that would not boot, forgot to patch.

I downloaded 4.7.5 just now. Will add to my card soon. But I have questions:
1. What is the difference between MATE 16.04.1 with 4.7.5 and 4.1.33? Will it really work better when I switch?
2. Your screen pictures keep showing a nifty System Monitor window. I haven't been able to figure out how to get that. Installing gnome-system-monitor didn't do any good.

The
stable kernel
4.7.5 has new drivers and the
stable longterm kernel
4.1.33 is more stable and reliable. If you are satisfied with the
stable longterm kernel
4.1.33 then you don't need the
stable kernel
4.7.5. If you buy a new hardware and it doesn't work with the
stable longterm kernel
4.1.33 then you can try the
stable kernel
4.7.5. Additionally you can try a test version of kernel
4.8 if the new hardware doesn't work with the
stable kernel
4.7.5 either.

This is the MATE system monitor. You can open it with the command
mate-system-monitor.

Thank you! In spite of a few warnings (** (mate-system-monitor:7191): WARNING **: SELinux was found but is not enabled.
(mate-system-monitor:7191): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_hash_table_lookup: assertion 'hash_table != NULL' failed
...) the monitor came up.
I will next see if it works on 16.10, to get info a blank Welcome won't give me there.
