Just stumbled upon this, which is an all too common misunderstanding.
A new thread with a well-chosen subject line to ask a new - even if slightly related - question is
never unnecessary and should always be preferred over tucking your question into an existing thread.
Three main reasons:
1: It avoids for readers or the original topic to be distracted by the new question.
2: It makes it easier for future readers to find answers to the same question. (Especially on a site like this one where the search tools are not all that good.)
3: It increases the chances of somebody who has the answer seeing your question.
P.S. Not meant as flames for you personally, esc, it's more a matter of your question giving me an opportunity for a general remark.
