Check the disk. I have come across DVD-RAM's showing as DVD's due to dirt on disc.

i bought three new disks and tested one (last weekend). with the same result.
as soon as i try to format it i get an error like "disk is read only" or similar - don't remember now.
AFAIR i got the same error when trying to format a too big partition on my new ssd with SFS...
i'll again cross check this with win7 when finding some time...

ok.

i tested the new dvd-ram on my win7 machine.
works ok. i can copy stuff on it, delete it and so on.
inserting it into the x1000 (dvd+rw mounted) i can read access it with the "normal" dvd icon on cd0:
trying to format it with the dvd-rw icon (as described some posts above) results in an sfs error:
"device DVD+RW: (sb600sata.device, unit 0) This volume is write protected"

?!

Maybe silly question, but did you use FormatCDRW (in utilities drawer IIRC) tool for this?
Not sure but formatting and using a DVD "like"a floppy is only for DVD-RAM?
Haven't use DVD-/+RW DVD-RAM long time ago so I can be wrong/missing something.
Have a DVD-RAM somewhere, will do some test and post results here ASAP.
DVD-/+RW those are "normal" DVD-/+R but you can add/erase all content serveral times.

FormatCDRW doc, hope it (sort of) helps:
Requirements: CD or DVD RW drive with Packet-Writing support, perferably Mount Rainier compatible, special filesystem (SFS 1.196+).

Change the DEVICE and UNIT tooltypes of the Storage/DOSDrivers/(CD|DVD)(M)(+|-)RW dosdriver(s) to the ones of your CD/DVD writer. Use CDMRW if you have a Mount Rainier compatible CD-RW drive, DVDMRW if you have a Mount Rainier compatible DVD+RW drive.

CDRW and DVD+RW drives with Mount Rainier support:
Use the CDMRW or DVDRW mountlist and use "Format MRW" for formating. MRW background formatting can be stopped and restarted with "Stop formatting" and "Continue formatting", manually restarting an inclomplete MRW format is not required, it will be done automatically by the drive.

Drives without Mount Rainier (MRW) support are supported as well, but don't write often to a CD/DVD, remeber that they can only be overwritten about 1000 times and without MRW there is no defect management, i.e. the first bad sectors makes the compelete CD/DVD unusable already.
-CDRW: Use the CDRW dosdriver, the usable size of a 650 MB CDRW is about 450 MB. If the CDRW is not empty you have to use "Blank" first.
-DVD-RW: Use the DVD-RW dosdriver, the usable size is about 4.383 GB. Using "Blank" is not required. Warning: Formating a DVD-RW takes a lot of time and can not be interrupted.
-DVD+RW: Use the DVD+RW dosdriver, the usable size is about 4.376 GB. Using "Blank" is not required and like with MRW formatting is done in background and can be stopped and restarted anytime.

Don't use a CDRW/DVD-RW/DVD+RW like a hardisk, it isn't and can't be, and only store large files, for example (backup) archives, not something like a unarchived icon collection ;-)
If you need something which works like a removeable HD get a MO or DVD-RAM drive instead, MO and DVD-RAM media can be overwritten several millon times.

If something doesn't work please start "FormatCDRW >log debug" in a shell, do it again and attach the log file to your bugreport.

reading some of the comments above i undestand that for a dvd-ram you don't need formatcdrw. only for this mount rainier stuff?
instead the dvd-ram should act like a hdd drive.

well, this is why i started this thread alltogether. this is not really documented somewhere :-/ it's currently a trial and error thing - resulting in errors mainly :-(

thanks and regards....

afaics my drive does not support mount rainier but dvd-ram.
that's what amidvd shows me:
amidvd screenshot
amidvd screenshot
i mean the important sentence seems to be:
"If you need something which works like a removeable HD get a MO or DVD-RAM drive instead, MO and DVD-RAM media can be overwritten several millon times."
that's what i want to use/test.
not a dvd-rw with mount rainier.
and in that case i don't need formatcdrw?! i don't understand :-(

Looking at Wikipedia it seems that DVD-RAMs don't use Mount Rainier.
Mount Rainier can be used only with drives that explicitly support it (a part of SCSI/MMC and can work over ATAPI), but works with standard CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW media.
and in that case i don't need formatcdrw?! i don't understand :-(
I would say that you don't need it for DVD-RAMs.

Too bad that the old os4welt forum is lost, i have tried this some years ago on my A1-XE and joerg helped me alot.
However i'm not sure if i had dvd-rams working or not and i can not find my dvd-ram disk.

BTW:
The FormatCDRW doc is missing in the non-beta version of 4.1 for the X1000.
