I just tried to install the new ubuntu 14 with the same result.
I boot to the graphical login but the system does not use fonts so I cant see what it says. I log in and everything seems to work but there are no letters. So it's a little hard to navigate the system.
If only it were possible to get the letters back

Then I solved the problem of missing text (fonts). It seems that My installation lacked a folder of fonts in / etc/X11/fonts. It was the 75 dpi folder and I then copied it over from my ubuntu 12.04. Then I booted Ubuntu 14 again and log in to Lubuntu and xfce where everything worked except for a few error messages.

Thank you
Did you notice that it was Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr(beta), not 13 I got to run?
There are several things that do not work yet, Ubuntu 14 has not found any of my sound card.

Yes I have noticed that.

That's great.

Did you have add your user to the group "audio"?

Yes i have done that.
Ubuntu can see the hardware but they do not appear as an option in the audio configurations.(driver??) I must try studying a bit on the net about this

I have some problems with the colors in all my Linux installations (Debian, Ubuntu 12.04, 12.10 and 14.04) This relates in particular to the transparent colors as in the audio icon as seen in the attached screenshot. Do you have any idea what it was due and whether it can be corrected?
