Ubuntu as you found out doesn't allow a root log in. But unless you need to login as root on the desktop you don't need it. You can work around it by typing "sudo su root" in a terminal and then you are root. OSX has the same issue.vox wrote:Also, it must be hacked a bit to create a ROOT ACCOUNT.

The DVD as purchased at Amiwest came with a printout that shows how to boot the DVD on the X1000 and use it in live mode. Even a chimp like me was able to do it. The same printed document (is a .PDF on the Live DVD also) shows how to install. Even a chimp like me was able to install it. ah ah ah ee eee eee. 
It is simple and well worth the $25 I spent for the DVD. Just copy the kernel to your CF Card and follow the install procedures and soon you will be running Ubuntu on the X1000.
I am a novice and did it with ease.
