I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini. It did not work on X1000/AOS4.1 upd6 either :-(. However I did the rooting:

It was really easy, an no problem. Pressing all the desired buttons all at once is a bit tricky, however I you screw it up somehow, just reboot (Right after flashing you have to interrupt the reboot - however, if you miss the interruption - just turn of and on and try again). I was really nervous about it, but no problem at all - EASY :-) + Install SG USB Mass Storage Enabler

SD Card inside S4mini is now recognized as USB MassStorage on my AOS 4.1 and I already copied heaps of MP3 onto it!

Given that PTP stands for Picture Transfer Protocol I don't see how you expect it to work anything but pictures...

I don't expect it to. However, the PTP utility which comes with OS4 does have the ability to copy things other than pictures, but it's worth ignoring this ability, because it's pointless.
