Running 68xxx Games & Apps in Amiga OS 4.1u5

Post by amigasociety »

Being new to Amiga I understand (kind of) that with the 4.1u4 and newer it has built in a way to run older Amiga games and apps.

Is there anything I need to use this feature setup wise?

Or do I just download a 68xxx game or app from Aminet and double click the game/app and it will just run?

School me on this please.

Thanks

Correct, runinuae mounts it (via diskimage) and boots into E-UAE seemlessly.

Re: Running 68xxx Games & Apps in Amiga OS 4.1u5

I have had no luck yet getting any 68xxx games to run.

I visited Aminet and downloaded for example AmiDonkey, a DonkeyKong clone I guess.

Downloaded app, unarchived it, double click on AmiDonkey, and the X1000 freezes where only a COLD boot will boot the system again.

Is it really hit and miss what 68xxx apps and games will work?

Anyone care to offer a suggestion of a 68xxx app or game from Aminet will work for me so I can see how it all works?

@amigasociety

Well we are talking about 2 different things, with RunInUAE (UAE) you can easily run many old ADF (and not only ADF) programs/games with just a few clicks, so for example when you double-click on them an UAE window will be opened and you can play with them into an (closed) emulated box

Another very different thing is the plain internal 68k emulation provided by OS4 (called Petunia) with this one you can run many 68k software projected in AmigaOS 3.x era (but also many recent 68k programs of course)

This second one is a JIT emulation that can open such software transparently into OS4 as any other PPC native one so in short indistinguible with respect to any other native OS4 program.

Keep note that any software that was created using the old classic Amiga custom chip will never work with Petunia but most probably will work only under UAE (as for example WinUAE on Windows or MacOS)

Also important, even if a software was not related to a particular custom chip (such for example an old AmigaOS 3.x program) it's very possible that it will don't work aswell under AmigaOS4 because any possible incompatibility bwtween the two worlds

So when you are tryed to run AmiDonkey (as is) you most likely start it with Petunia and it's very possible that the game is just incompatible with AmigaOS4 or even it use certain calls to the old Amiga chip custom

So to end, my suggest is to use RunInUAE to start ADF files (expecially old Amiga games) or old software that use custom chip, instead just download and try normally any other 68k program using the standard Petunia emulation

Here is an example:

This one is a 68k program that you can start without any problem under AmigaOS4

http://aminet.net/package/util/misc/AHIRNG-amigaos3

Just download, extract and start it .. you will never know that in reality it runs under emulation ;)

While this one is an ADF file (an old classic Amiga's game)

http://www.amigafuture.de/downloads.php ... df_id=3643

When you extract it and then double-clicked on the ADF file the game will be open directly with UAE (RunInUAE)

Hope that now is more clear, but if you have any other question just ask :)

I thought runinuae was part of the os now so how do I tell an app to open in one or the other?

Is JIT and RunInUAE an app I can find on the harddrive to launch and run or part of the OS behind the scenes that I can't force to tell an app or game to run under one or the other?

I have looked around all my drawers and not finding a RunInUAE app to launch.

I do see a compatibility Preference window that showed JIT was disabled for CirrusGD5446, javascript.library, and RexxMast so I removed the checks from all those boxes so it shows enabled now. Not sure I needed to do this but did it.

Any further help on where to find RunInUAE and then I can try it.

Tj

*As a side note, I did download the JelloOthelly game and double clicking on the application gives me a Guru Med window so I had to kill the app.

** Side note #2, downloaded a Fanwor Legend of Gemda from OSdepot and that game launched and ran. How do I know if it is running under JIT or RunInUAE?

If your double click an exe 68k app then it will use petunia.
If you run an ISO, adf etc etc, it will use RunInUAE.

If your using an app via petunia, you may have to add it to the jit exclusion list under prefs.

What happens when you double click an adf, does it launch RunInUAE?
If not, then yours proberly went out before it was installed (there was a problem with blank screen, which has since been fixed).

System locks up. I can see whole screen left as it was where the cursor is over the icon I double clicked, but whole system locks up and I have to turn it off. Warm Reset does not work so I have had to use power button in these cases.

Please advise.

I take it the 4.1u5 CD has the installer for RunInUAE?

@Christopher Follett
If your double click an exe 68k app then it will use petunia.
Well while is true sometimes does not, for example if you have an already opened session of RunInUAE and then try to double click on a 68k exe you can be able to open such apps inside UAE ... aniway

@amigasociety
I thought runinuae was part of the os now so how do I tell an app to open in one or the other?
Yes and no, i mean: RunInUAE even if integrated (well better term should be: availible directly on your system) at the end is the usual UAE so any apps that you are starting on it it will run "outside" the normal operative system area.

So you can't see the two type of emulation method as the same thing, they are not ... Petunia is a library that is able to calls certain 68k calls, so any 68k apps you try to run it will run as any AmigaOS4 application ...
I have looked around all my drawers and not finding a RunInUAE app to launch.
Do you have an X1000 right ?
AFAIK your system comes with an already installed AmigaOS 4.1 Update 5, maybe RunInUAE was not provided by default on your plain installation .. i don't know that, ask on the X1000 forum ..
I do see a compatibility Preference window that showed JIT was disabled for CirrusGD5446, javascript.library, and RexxMast so I removed the checks from all those boxes so it shows enabled now. Not sure I needed to do this but did it.
Compatibility preferences are referred to Petunia, not RunInUAE
*As a side note, I did download the JelloOthelly game and double clicking on the application gives me a Guru Med window so I had to kill the app.
Most likely it will not work under OS4, check if you have RunInUAE somewhere on your system if not download it from OS4Depot:

http://os4depot.net/index.php?function= ... ninuae.lha
** Side note #2, downloaded a Fanwor Legend of Gemda from OSdepot and that game launched and ran. How do I know if it is running under JIT or RunInUAE?
If you download such file from OS4Depot it's surely a native PPC application so in that case emulations are not used at all because all are working natively

I am awaiting back Chris response that was made before yours. Appears mine did not have it installed.

Hopefully it is on the CD they sent me?

If not, I will take their direction to download or whatever and see what happens.

AmigaKit (Chris), let me know best and easiest way to get RunInUAE on my X1000.

Thanks

Solution a) Use just the ADF files e.g. downloadable via http://www.lemonamiga.com/ You can find many on Torrents - they work like a charm on X1000 with OS 4.1.5
Other solutions are http://amiga.nvg.org/warlock/adf/ or legally buy Amiga Forever, a lot of ADFs are there
b) Take a good read which 68k software CAN run on OS4 without UAE (by dearchive and click). Generally, most of "RTG" ones are more likely to work ( but not those labeled as OCS,ECS and AGA only). Good news is those OCS ECS AGA you can run inside UAE. Also MUI apps are more likely to work.
Here is list of how and what works http://www.intuitionbase.com/ossoftware ... letter=ALL
RTG apps on Aminet http://aminet.net/search?query=RTG
MUI apps on Aminet http://aminet.net/search?query=MUI
c) Some 68k apps don`t work, and might crash OS4 for many reasons, mostly either doesn`t being "OS friendly" or way too old.
Examples http://www.intuitionbase.com/ossoftware ... letter=NON

Sounds confusing, but its not. Lets say that during AmigaOS 3 to AmigaOS 4 they tried to preserve much of compatibility.
But e.g. these chips are absent from boards, and any "banging" them by software results in instant OS4 crash except when emulated in UAE.
