I don't think power cuts are likely to have damaged your machine, but it is possible, for instance, if there is a big inductive load somewhere near your house (like a big electric motor), that could make a "kick" or voltage surge when the power is shut off.

Lyle, I am using an SSD, The blue light just stays on all the time though even after booting and the machine is just sitting idle and it comes on immediately on switch on where I would expect at least a small delay (It did this with the mechanical drive too). Ok, Seems the booting problem may be my own fault. When I installed OS4.1 FE it said during the install to add a SWAP partition, So I did. However it seems I messed up the file system type on the other partitions while I was at it. After some work with CFE and some investigating I got it all sorted ...

I was already down to a single hard drive and the optical drive and was doing a fresh install after wiping the entire drive. I also then installed the radeon 2 drivers that I bought.
