Just wanted to confirm all I need to connect a 2nd SATA Hard Drive to the X1000 I can use one of the available power leads, in this case the one piggy-backing off the 1st internal hard drive, and then buy a standard SATA cable can connect from SATA drive to one of the available SATA ports on the motherboard?

Does it matter which port on motherboard is used or not?

Lastly, any special jumper settings or anything like that on SATA drives one has to do? Plan is to install Debian on a 1TB SATA drive that I install and just curious if I need to set drive as slave so there is no conflict with the 1st drive or are those things not needed with modern SATA drives?

The answer is pretty much how you've run through it in your mind. I recently just brought a Blue WD 1TB SATA2 drive myself (to install Linux too funny enough) and hooked it up to either spare SATA port and hooked up to whatever power connector was closest.

So go for it, this is one of the more easily accomplished endevours in self modifying your computer setup. In saying that though, never ever hurts to ask the question!

I can recommend buying a SATA cable with snap locks on the plugs. It is really good for stability to have the plugs fitted more securely in both ends.

Apart from that, like Slayer says, no problems. SATA handles all the tedious details itself, so no jumpering needed.

It does matter if you want to be able to boot off this 2nd hard drive. Only SATA ports 0 and 2 are bootable.

I need to better understand the SATA connections then as stock. I see the two SATA ports more inward on the motherboard are used for the internal HDD and the DVD unit. Therefore the two outer edge SATA connectors are free.

How do I tell what ones are ports 0, 1, 2, etc...???

There is a a layout diagram of the X1000 with slot and port numbers on the last page of the technical reference manual. It should be in SYS:Documentation/X1000_TRM.pdf.

If you are going to install Linux, you may also want to take a look at X1000_CFE.pdf first. (It is in the same directory). It has information about the firmware and how to change the menu.

As long as you are booting Linux from a CF or USB you will be fine. Dennis is refering to loading of amigaboot.of by CFE, as CFE can only see the SATA devices in ports 0 and 2 your AmigaOS 4 boot device must be on one of these ports.

The two SATA ports next to the edge of the board are SATA 1 and SATA 3, You can install and boot a Linux installation on a drive attached to these ports (Both Trevor and I have done so) Also AmigaOS4 will see any drives you attach here (If you want it to)

Hope this helps.. and don't be afraid to ask if anything is not clear, we spent a lot of time testing this out.
