X5000 support

[Note: I posted this on Amiga.org and decided to post it here too just to cover the bases)

I always thought of the X5000 as the most powerful of the next generation Amiga computers. But it's crippled by a lack of support. My Amiga NG interest goes in spurts. It's been years since I powered up my X5000. In the meantime I forget everything. Lately I decided to try some AmigaOS programming with my X5000. It's set up in my computer cabinet and all I have to do is push the power button. My boot drive was having validation problems, so I decided to reinstall. Shouldn't be too difficult, right? I have a special X5000 install CD. It always boots up okay. I went to the Hyperion website and there are six AmigaOS 4.1 updates. The second update can be installed easily using AmiUpdate. I believe there is a specific X5000 version. I can't install any update beyond Update 2. I spent many hours trying. The update documentation lists the supported systems and the X5000 isn't one of them. The only upgrade avenue is through A-Eon's Enhancer Software packages, which I purchased and installed.

I've had two other next generation Amigas: an AmigaOne Micro and a Sam 460. The Sam died (apparently) and I sold the non-functioning computer to somebody years ago. The Micro is a dependable little workhorse (it's little because I put it in a small case). I can install all the AmigaOS updates and everything else. But it's also crippled by lack of video card support and generally antiquated hardware. But like I said, it's dependable and I can always use it.

The included internet browsers with my X5000 can't handle any modern internet protocols. They are useless. I've tried Timberwolf, but it requires AmigaOS 4.1 Update 4. It's very slow on my micro.

So back to my original topic, are there any upgrade avenues available for the X5000 that I don't know about and/or haven't tried yet. Is there a way to install the Hyperion AmigaOS updates?

Hi,

I just checked and there are 3 updates available for AmigaOS4.1 for use with the X5000.

I would suggest a fresh install of the X5000 AmigaOS4.1 using the install cd and then apply the updates below.

AmigaOS4.1FinalEditionUpdate1.lha 24222100 Bytes 2016-12-31 AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition, Update 1 Details
AmigaOS4.1FinalEditionUpdate2-53.14.lha 33747262 Bytes 2021-01-12 AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition, Update 2 Details
AmigaOS4.1FinalEditionUpdate2Hotfix.lha 13750319 Bytes 2021-01-12 AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Update 2 Hotfix

When done, you could enhance OS4 with the Enhancer software by A-EON.

If your done setting up your system i would suggest installing the latest Odyssey browser version by Kas1e
https://kas1e.mikendezign.com/aos4/odyssey_betas/ Thats Beta7

Hope this helps.

A couple of corrections here:

Update1 is not relevant for the X5000, as the delivered ISO should already be later than FE update1.

Update2 as it stands on the Hyperion website is already hotfixed, so no need to also install the separate Hotfix, that was only for people who back then had installed the faulty first release of Update2, so they could fix that instead of downloading the full (fixed) Update2 again.

Update2 can BTW also be installed using AmiUpdate, which should also offer all the updates made after that. See the list by visiting the website http://update.amigaos.net/ - there are more than 3, actually. (BTW, it seems that if you use AmiUpdate to get Update2, it will actually install the unfixed one followed by the hotfix, but the end result will be the same).

In order to be able to install those, you must let AmiUpdate save the login credentials to fetch them, they are the same as you use for logging in to the hyperion-entertainment.com site where your licenses are registered (and of course you must have licensed your AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition there).

Note: the credentials you use here on the forum site are not the same, they won't work in AmiUpdate.

As for the Enhancer, I'd suggest only installing the graphics drivers from that at least for a start, then create a backup of your system, and afterwards install only the things from the Enhancer you really want.

Best regards,

Niels

I did use AmiUpdate to install AmigaOS4.1 Final Edition Update 2. That always goes very well. I have installed everything AmiUpdate offers except for MUI. I noticed there is a new version of AmiUpdate. AmiUpdate used to update itself. I don't think that is working. I will install the new version of AmiUpdate and see if that helps (I forgot about the AmiUpdate update :) .

I installed the new AmiUpdate and ran it. It offered a lot of new stuff. I installed all of it. Now it looks like I will be able to install AmigaOS4.1 Final Edition Update 3. That is an interesting development. Now the question is: isn't AmiUpdate supposed to update itself when an update is available?

It is. But there is always some server change that renders it useless. I've been stuck on this twice I can recall. And when it happens I never knew I had an old broken AmiUpdate. I always have to check and manually update AmiUpdate myself. I don't know why it doesn't have a backdoor to check it self, so it could tell you it's too old, and you need to update it by hand. Facebook has a backdoor and knows when it's old. :?:
