Request for a polished Debian or Ubuntu distribution

Certainly a question to Xeno74.

I want to install a recent Debian based on my X1000, to use it as a user and as a developer. I mean Debian 8 or Ubuntu 15.10 would be great.

Xeno74, the work you make on the continuous testing of the different kernel versions, providing patches, etc. is huge! And you also produced a installation document.
I thank you very much for that. This is necessary to avoid a big gap.

However, on another side, I tried to installed Ubuntu 15.10 (that I also wanted to betatest to help) and that failed, maybe due to my graphic card (but I don't know really).

Would it be possible to choose one of these distributions, choose a kernel that works well (according to your experience and other feedback), and describe features that are enabled (when testing some kernel evolutions, you mentioned KVM, ftrace, ...), in order to provide the same base for all users? There are also threads about Iceweasel / Firefox for example.

Do you see what I mean? In addition to the test of various kernels, it would be so great to have a recent distribution of reference, configured to propose the best user experience!

I try to read all the threads here but I am sometimes lost and having very few times, it is difficult to follow (and even more having no working distribution installed on my X1000).

Of course, I propose my help to cautiously test and provide feedback.

Thank you again!

Thank you! :-)

Short question: Have you tried to install Debian 8.2 yet? Please try it. There isn't an easy installable Linux distribution available currently. You have to try it yourself. ;-)

Huum... you answered the easy part of my message :-)

No, I have not tried yet Debian 8.2. Does it require files (patched kernel, modules, ...) you use to provide?

About "There isn't an easy installable Linux distribution available currently", this is exactly what I miss (and I am sure I'm not alone). In my situation, unfortunately, that makes the availability of various kernels useless, not knowing which distribution will work, how it will behave and with which features...

And trying to install myself Debian 8.2 knowing that it's not easy and with no guarantee of success is not very stimutaling...

@Corto

1) What is your GFX card ?

2) Do you read this thread explaining how to install Ubuntu from scratch ?

http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... =35&t=2639

It worked for me, it will work for you too ;)

Did you install the version 15.10 with a 4.x kernel?

1) I use a RadeonHD 6570.

2) No, I don't remember I did read this thread about Lubuntu. I do that right now. Huum, long thread, I don't know really where to look at.

3) I don't remember which kernel version it was ... I followed the initial document you wrote, with the associated files. Opening the current version, version 4.2 is mentioned. But I don't know if it was version 4.2 or 3.18/19 :-(
Is it supposed to work better with 4.x kernel? Which one do you recommend?

In the thread that i linked, i installed ubuntu with a HD6670, therefore your gfx card should work.

By rereading this thread, i had a problem with the initrd.gz file but it's no more linked. Xeno74 do you still have the good initrd.gz file ?

If yes, Corto, after to have put a kernel (4.3) and the initrd on a usb stick and issued these commands at CFE, where does it fail for you ?

CFE> ramdisk -z -addr=0x24000000 -fatfs usbdisk0:initrd.gz
CFE> setenv bootargs "root=/dev/ramdisk"
CFE> boot -elf -noints -fatfs usbdisk0:vmlinux-4.3

There is an initrd.gz for Ubuntu 15.10: initrd.gz

Installation instructions: ubuntu_MATE_15.10_installation_instructions_A1-X1000.pdf

@xeno74 I used a 4.2 kernel.

Any chance it would work better with 4.3? In the thread dedicated to kernel 4.3, the final post is not very encouraging, notably with:
PLEASE use the kernel 4.1 if you want a stable and reliable kernel for your AmigaONE X1000
I am sorry but I don't know what to do, it becomes very difficult to follow. I am convinced my initial request makes sense and would help testers and users (who may be different people).
