OS4Depot's Timberwolf vs Aminet's Timberwolf

Hi all,

Maybe I'm the culprit here, I don't know. I downloaded and installed Timberwolf from OS4Depot. When opening, Grim Reaper shows error during Timberwolf-bin execution and I have to select Kill. On the flip side of this coin, I downloaded and installed Timberwolf from Aminet and all is right with the world. Just wanted to report in case there is a problem.

Cheers!

So did you compare the two archives you downloaded? Use "md5sum" to get a unique hash from each archive.

Hi Tony,

No, I did not use md5sum. I know my 'round Amiga but never have used it. I did save the Grim Reaper crashlog. I can verify that the condition is very repeatable on my current AOS4.1FE installation using OS4Depot's version. The current version on Aminet is running. Sluggish but loads up and works.

Okay I did a double take on both lha downloads. I also did an md5sum which was irrevalent because they are different versions. So, Timberwolf version 4.0.1.0252 from OS4Depot is not loading up for me. The following is the first part of the Crashlog.

Well, it has little meaning of where you download TimberWolf from, but it's the latest TimberWolf release that hasn't been updated for a great couple of years now.

No matter where you download it from, you will likely experience this Grim Reaper message now and then. Mostly, it runs just fine. A little slow for some operations, but useable.

UPDATE: I have compared the two versions of TimberWolf from OS4Depot and Aminet. The one from Aminet is version 4.0.1.182, while the one from OS4Depot is version 4.0.1.252.

So the one from OS4Depot.net is a slightly updated one, also from 2012, but this version is the "latest" of TimberWolf. This one is the one you should use.

You can try again to download this version from OS4Depot.net, or google TimberWolf 4.0.1.252 and see if you can download it from a direct source. Good luck :)

Good Afternoon,

Okay, got some sleep last night. Unpacked both Timberwolf.lha in two different locations and did comparison via DM2. Bingo! OS4Depot's download excludes all the Directories, files only. Simply deleted old files in Timberwolf v. 4.01.0182 and copied Timberwolf v. 4.0.1.0252 files over. Thanks! Guess I had to sleep on it.

Cheers!!

Now it is faster.

What can I say? I had to put on the Amiga get serious cap, spin it backwards and crack the knuckles. Looking forward to Timberwolf's further advancement. Yahoo is pushing Firefox. There goes the neighborhood!

Cheers!

Hello again,
Here's my discovery after trial and error and Grim Reaper Kills.
Aminet's version of Timberwolf (Installed and Stand-alone) opens just fine and loads web pages as you would expect. Grim Reaper message upon Quitting Timberwolf. Interesting?!
OS4Depot's version (file update installed to Aminet's version) Timberwolf will not open. Grim Reaper kill as I described previously.

Ok here's where I had to get a little savvy:
Timberwolf worked just fine (except for slow as Christmas) in the AmigaOS4.1 FE install from AmigaKit. So, I used all the Directories (only) from the Aminet install of Timberwolf and added the Files (only) from AmigaKit's version of Timberwolf. Now I have a very smooth working Timberwolf. Excellent!

Tried blending AmigaKit's Timberwolf Directories with OS4Depot's Timberwolf Files....and Poof! Grim Reaper upon opening Timberwolf. Still interesting! I haven't had time to start replacing one file at a time to nail down the culprit. Just reporting my findings and my own work-around. Cheers!
