Since a few weekend I'm trying with out success to install any flavour of Linux on my X1000.

Mint PPC just stops with a garbled screen after loading the kernel,
Debian wheezy goes black.

Ubuntu Live Remix DVD stops after loading the kernel with the following:

NEMO SB600 IOB base e0000000
no UART detected at 0x1

BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18-5-1ubuntu4) build-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs)


I tried the kernel on the USB (mint and Debian and of course from the Ubuntu DVD), and the newer ones 3.13.18 and 4.0 but I'm stuck. I mastered 4 DVDs already, so I doubt it's something wrong with them and dd' wheezy and mint a couple of times on 2 different USB sticks and external HD.

I also copied the kernels to a CF card and loaded from there.

Other than that I tried connecting the external HD to the internal SATA 3 but it is not load from there (root file system is there, kernel on CF0:)

Any help is very appreciated.

How much RAM is installed in your A1-X1000? Which graphics card is installed? Could you write down the commands that you used to boot Linux, please?

Hi Xeno,

I managed to install MintPPC 11 and Ubuntu. I can't really say what wasn't working.
The only change I made this time was using Mint in a VMWare VM instead of Debian or Ubuntu (also in a VM) and to dd the MintPPC 11 to an SSD drive instead of an HDD.
I then plugged the SSD to the internal SATA in the A1X1k.
And could start mint,
here I copied the Ubuntu Remix to an USB pen drive
restarted the A1 again and loaded from the USB pen.
The installation of Ubuntu Remix alongside MintPPC 11 went smooth on the SSD.

So everything seems to be working, I'll throw in Debian on the same drive since I don't like Ubuntu that much after having met Richard Stallmann

Oh, wait I haven't installed the 3D drivers yet..

4GB Ram
Radeon HD5450 or is it 5460?
the commands where the ones copied from the manual and adjusted for CF0 and /dev/sdxx

So I'm coming back again..

Debian halts after the installation of the Base System. Except some of the previous steps which are not in the same order, it goes like explained in the guide.
The "Debian Installer main menu" appears on the screen after the "Install the base System" went through. As far as I can tell it goes to 100% (last I can see is 98%).
"Configure the package manager" is highlighted. If I select it, a brief progress bar flashes but then i get back to the menu.
"Select and install software" does the same, quick flash of a progress bar.

I tried the subsequent steps but the same progress bar flashes or nothing happens at all. Even "Finish the installation" does not get me further.

Funny thing when I then try to boot the base system, it tells me wrong password.
I went to all the steps again and selected the same password for "root" and "user". To keep things simple, the password is the same as the username, so I could press the exact same keys on the keyboard and verify they right keymap was selected (amigo).

I'm using the 4.0 kernel, tested the LTS 3.13.18 too, Debian-8.0.0-powerpc-netinst.iso copied to USB stick (with all the ".dirs")

I'm sorry about this problem. This problem exists on the Pegasos II either.

I managed to install Debian 7.8 using the first DVD. I tried a dist-upgrade to Jessie and I get stuck at "dev_215017_powerpc.deb" with the following error

Preconfiguring packages ...
(Reading database ... 179158 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to unpack .../udev_215-17_powerpc.deb
Since release 198, udev requires support for the following features in the running kernel:

- inotify(2) (CONFIG_INOTIFY_USER)
- signalfd(2) (CONFIG_SIGNALFD)
- accept4(2)
- open_by_handle_at(2) (CONFIG_FHANDLE)
- timerfd_create(2) (CONFIG_TIMERFD)
- epoll_create(2) (CONFIG_EPOLL)

Please upgrade your kernel before or while upgrading udev.


I'm using kernel 4.0 and it's installed on a CF-card (FAT16) in the internal CF-reader.
ATM I have no clue how to upgrade the running kernel, is that even possible? (or does it just
mean a newer kernel should be installed; But then, not being in a standard location, apt-get
can not recognise it on the CF card, unless I restart right?

I'll leave the system turned on, I fear if I turn it of or restart it, I have to start from scratch.
Maybe you know a solution.

P.S. Only reason I'm upgrading to 8.0 is because I was trying to compile LibreCAD 2.0x from the
sources, but g++ stops telling me "-std=c++11 unknown option"

As far as I could find in the www, c++11 needs Debian 8.0.. sob

edit: the compiling runs and completes without errors on a VM with Debian 8.0 (32bit, x86)

Thank you for your answer. Spectre660 told me, that the option CONFIG_FHANDLE=y is not set in the Nemo kernel config. I'm compiling the RC6 with this option next week.

My problem is how to install the mint1.1.img.
It seems I have mint already installed, but it keeps me asking for a password. I tried all I could think of to no avail.
If I click on the red button in the right part of the task bar,it tells me of 616 update available , the updates program asks me a password to install these.

Any suggestions how to progess?
