System: X1000, AmigaOS4.1 update6, RadeonHD 6850, 4GB RAM.

Strange error that has bugged me for a while now.
When I run certain programs, I get this requestor and notification. Hitting cancel allows the program to load. Hitting retry causes a system lockup requiring a hard reset.
Attached are two snoopy output files and a screengrab.
The snoopy outputs are from RunInDOSBOX and Freedink - I wouldn't expect either of these to try to access a printer?
I don't really have a clue as to what is causing this error, but from the output files they both have FAIl errors with ENVARC:usbprinter.device

Before I jump into ENVARC and start deleting things, any advice or help would be welcomed.

The usbprinter.device problem was reported by me in these forums back in 2011 in the "usbprinter.device problem if printer not turned on" topic. The problem has been confirmed by numerous people and discussed in other topics in these forums. I recently mentioned that it's still not fixed in the recent topic "Serious bug in new ASyncWB".

The problem seems to stem from the fact that some programs open the printer.device to access the printer settings without actually doing any printing. Other programs seem to access printer.device for other reasons. When the printer.device is opened or accessed it apparently opens usbprinter.device which complains if there is no printer or the printer is turned off. The old usbprinter.device ( version 52.8 (03/11/2008) ) did not have the requester problem and I have been using the old usbprinter.device for years now. SInce it appears that the problem will never be fixed, I suggest you get the old usbpriner.device and use that one instead.

I have often come across this nuisance.

It is a real PITA, having to turn on a printer I have no intention of using just to get past an error message. Either fix it or re-release the older version that works.

Since the problem has been with us for three years now, I doubt it.

usbprinter.device V53.2 (12/11/2009) can be found on the OS4.1 Update 1 CD (in Devs/). I don't know if that one gives the same problem.

I believe I got mine from the original OS 4.1 CD. There was a problem with the old version when you tried to enter "usbprinter.device" in Printer Prefs/Printer Type/Port Device: without a printer installed and turned on. The newer usbprinter.device fixed that problem but introduced the problem of multiple requesters if a program accesses printer.device without a printer installed and turned on.

Thanks Xenix. Oldest version I have is the update5 .iso that came with the X1000. It has the current version on it.

Old bugs are an important part of Amiga's identity. We need to carry them with us to stay ourselves.

It certainly pays to keep all old versions of system files. I have copies of my WorkBench all the way back to OS4 pre2. Strangely, updates frequently fix stuff that I never noticed or that never bothered me but break stuff that really bothers me

Just a bump in the road here, The problem has come back. Or the problem was always there but recently it has had greater severity.
