CPU usage puzzle

I'm assuming this is not an X1000-specific issue, but I could be wrong.
CPUInfo has been occasionally indicating high levels when so far as I know nothing is running besides LimpidClock.
This morning I did my e-mail with YAM, then after I iconized it I noticed that CPUInfo was reporting usage wavering around 30%. Could an iconized YAM be causing that I wondered, and reopened YAM and killed it. Then CPU usage jumped to about 40%, up and down a couple percentage points.
So I did a warm reboot. Workbench came up, CPUInfo said 1%~3% for a few seconds, then jumped to 57% and stayed in that vicinity. I wasn't even touching the mouse or keyboard.
I did another warm reboot and got sensible readings, so I launched Odyssey and came here while this potential problem was still on my mind. While I have been typing this, CPU usage has been reported bouncing around from 20% to 29%. Now I stopped typing for about two minutes, no change in CPU usage.
Is this a symptom of something?
