The pictures show me trying to run the Printer Prefs, but getting the message "Failed to open printer.device".

Further on, when pressinc Cancel, i do get inside the Printer Prefs, but when trying to pick the netprinter.device, it displays another message, saying "Can't open printer port device "netprinter.device" unit 0."

HELP! What to do? I don't want to start from scratch again. I spent a lot of work making my system as modern as it looks.

However, i have NetPrinter installed. 2 of the deutch catalogs in SYS:Locate/Catalogs/Deutch, NETPAR is moved to SYS:DEVS/DOSDrivers and turnt into a mount file adding its' tooltypes.
The netprinter.device is in DEVS:, and the NetPrinter preference is in SYS:Prefs.

Could i have changed something, without knowing it? How to make the ordinary printer prefs to work again?

I usually don't take wild guesses, but I see that sys:prefs/printer appears to have tooltypes for many of the available settings.
If I got stuck with a bad setting causing trouble, I might remove the offending tooltypes and see if that clears it up.

Open Prefs, click ONCE on printer, right-click and select "information", select the "Icon" tab, and then put () around any
tooltype that might be causing you trouble. Don't forget to press "Save" after you are complete.

I don't know if that will fix it, but it's worth a try.

I tried removing the tooltypes in the printer prefs, but it still shows the message saying "Failed to open printer.device".

Just rename the prefs file for the printer.

Code: Select all

rename ENVARC:Sys/printer.prefs ENVARC:Sys/printer.prefs.off
rename ENV:Sys/printer.prefs ENV:Sys/printer.prefs.off

I tried, but it didn't make a difference, but perhaps deleting these information? I try.

Following the guide from Solie to use Postscript, and installed the lpr.device, it solved the problem. Still, for the Generic, the error is still there, and the icon for it doesn't show up.

I might say that the failure of displaying this preference is half-solved, but now we know for sure where the problem is, so it should be solved completely, really.

It was quite a mess. I was near to force myself to re-install everything from scratch again. Luckily, i don't have to do that.

If any of you can help me bring back the setting also for Generic, then i am happy :)

Thanks for any help so far :)

The printer you are using with netprinter.device is switched on, or?

It wasn't switched on.

But however, i managed to solve this problem by copying the 3 printer prefs from the AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 CD.

I have made a new backup and i will try again, but this time ONLY fiddling with the NetPrinter prefs.
