Compositing handles screen refreshes?

Hi all,
Recently, I switched off compositing in Prefs/Gui, as I'm not too happy with the performance. It always seems quite slow to open certain windows (bookmarks in MuiOWB and MPlayerGui).
However, I noticed in OWB that if I try and download a file, the file requestor appears on MuiOWB's own screen, and if I move the file requestor around it erases MuiOWB's own window.
With compositing on, this doesn't happen.
Is this a bug introduced in the update to MUI that allowed the file requestor to appear on MuiOWB's own window?
