As has already been reported work has already begun on improving filesystem support with new systems on the way still to be confirmed.

Am I correct in thinking that this will open up the possibility of virtual filesystems e.g. http, ftp and network support in the not so distant future?

Anything is possible if enough effort is put in.

That's already possible with the current interface - FTP, HTTP and SMB are definitely available, there may be others!
