Just installed the latest OS update and noticed there is now an AmiUpdate drawer in SYS:System, I previously had AmiUpdate installed but in SYS:Utilities, can I delete this previous install?

Also, does AmiUpdate still need to be in WBStartup or the Network-Startup script for daily update checking?

The install process had every information during installation you need now.

It tells as one of the last steps that your original AmiUpdate install is still there and can eventually be deleted.

The update automatically deletes an already found item of AmiUpdate in WBStartup and replaces it with the new one.

What it does with (or if it even checks for) calls of AmiUpdate in other places (network-startup, user-start-up...) i don't know.

So, yes, you can delete your old AmiUpdate completely and i would get rid of every other call to prevent funny things

Thanks, should have been paying more attention during the installation I guess, didn't really think till I noticed both drawers afterwards.

Had to delete reference to AmiUpdate manually from the Network Startup script before I could delete the old drawer, this was still pointing to the old version. Also noticed Update Prefs was still pointing to the old location for RollBack and the logfile.

I didn't select automatic installation but noticed that the new Calculator has an outdated "tiny" icon with a TOOLTYPE that wasn't in my original (new size) Calculator icon. Did anyone try using AmiUpdate with the automatic installation option? I assume a proper update would add the new TOOLTYPE to the user's current icon or replace the current icon with the new one and copy the user's TOOLTYPE settings to it. Is that what happened with autoinstall or was your Calcualtor icon just replaced by the outdated "tiny" icon and your TOOLTYPE settings lost??

The new home for AmiUpdate is SYS:System/AmiUpdate. The installer will leave any old AmiUpdate installations alone so you can migrate things over to the new home. Since everybody seems to install things their own way it was pretty much impossible to create an installer to handle every situation.

No, the AutoInstall script only checks whether there is already an icon in your existing installation, and then copies a new one in if (and only if) there isn't one.

Guess AmiUpdate needs some sort of tooltype merging command added (and AutoInstall scripts to use it).

My original icon didn't have the GUIMODE=SIMPLE|EXTENDED Tooltype even though I have read about the existance of that option somewhere. If the autoinstall didn't use the update icon if one already existed, then some people still don't have the additional Tooltype. I think you're right, we need something that can merge Tooltypes. There are a number of programs that store all or some of their prefs as Tooltypes in the program icon. RA-OWB is a good example of that. Adding a tooltype merge shouldn't be too difficult since Solie wrote the "ChangeToolType" program that's at OS4Depot

One thing i found makes me feel a little bad
AmiUpdate stores the username/password pair in human readable form as a "sitelist" ascii file in the AmiUpdate directory.

While i understand that the information has to be taken from somewhere once it has been input once, could, for a future update, that file be encrypted in some way, pgp'ed so to speak?

This would be the best solution (personal opinion), because harvesting username/password pairs on the website itself is also ... suboptimal, i think?

I don't really want to point you to other projects who solved this as i'm pretty sure you have your own ideas...but as it happens YAM comes preinstalled and would be a good candidate which stores it's delicate data in encrypted form.

Do I understand correctly when I think that the drop down menu for workbench "Tools" should now include an item for "AmiUpdate" in addition to the "ResetWB" which has always been there?

If so, something went wrong in my install of update 6. The functionality is all there. It found several updates and downloaded/unpacked them for me. (I have it set to manual install.) But the tool menu item isn't there.
