This is another little problem that still from many time, almost since Update 1 from my experience, so as i already post the issue elsewhere i keep the chance to post here aswell

Have you ever tried to drag (not using cut and paste but just dragging with the mouse) folders from a partion to another ?

Here it's not rare to see the Workbench completely freezed, when this happen the OS will not respond at further input, mouse works but you can't click on other part nor open other windows/program at all!

For what i see this problem happen only with folder (not single files) and exactly when you drag them from a partition to another ...

A typical example in real life:

- Downloading an LhA file on RAM DISK:
- Exctracting the archive in RAM --> Now you have your folder
- Drag the folder from RAM DISK: to --> for example Work: partition

Before ask i don't know how to reproduce the issue and problem is not always here, all i know is that it happen from time to time and when happen i need to reset my Amiga = very very boring

RAM: is a special case. Try reproducing it from HD to HD.

Where you able to do a *warm* reboot afterwards? It would be interesting to get a dumbdebugbuffer output right after this freezes.

Yes reboot work normally, only Workbench seems freezed not the entire OS

Then after you freeze, do reboot by 3 buttons, and type in shell "dumpdebugbuffer >ram:file.txt", and attach here.

I can't reproduce it currently, but maybe freeze's log which you will get by dumpdebugbuffer will help in some direction.

Yes.

I would be much more concerned if this happened from HD to HD.

Important: It seems that redfox was able to reproduce exactly my problem, but for what i've understand (in his case) RAM Disk was not involved

Please note that this freeze happened while I was still using AmigaOS 4.1 Update 4.

I tried again today to recreate the system freeze that I encountered the evening I was preparing for my upgrade to AmigaOS 4.1 Update 5. Unfortunately, I cannot duplicate this freeze. It appears to have been a random event.

I have only one hard drive in my system.

Before an upgrade, I usually backup some files to a directory on my tiny FFS2 Backup partition and then copy this backup directory from my Backup partition to one or more of my USB sticks for offline storage. Usually, this works with no issues.

My backup directory contains my monitor settings, Env-Archive directory and S directory. I create a drawer (directory) on my FFS2 partition, and drag my Devs:Monitors/Radeon 7000 file, Env-Archive directory and S directory over to this drawer.

Then I plug in my USB stick, double-click on the USB stick icon to open it and drag the Backup drawer from my backup partition over to the open window showing the current contents of my USB stick.

On August 17, I did my backup as usual, plugged in my Lexar USB stick, opened the volume, dragged the backup directory from my backup partition over to the USB stick, waited for the copy to finish, closed the volume, unplugged my USB stick, plugged my Kingston USB stick into the same USB port, opened the volume, dragged the backup directory from my backup partition over to the USB stick, waited for the copy to finish, closed the volume, unplugged my USB stick, plugged my Duracell USB stick into the same USB port, opened the volume, dragged the backup directory from my backup partition over to the USB stick, waited for the copy to finish ... and my system froze up solid.

I cannot recall if I used a ctrl win win reset or a ctrl alt alt reset, but it did require a reset from the keyboard to bring the system back to life.

(Looking back, I suspect that my system was already compromised at this point. I should have powered off and on the system to recover.)

When I launched NetSurf, it was acting as if the network was down. NetSurf stalled. Launched OWB with the same results.

The system seemed to come back to after another reset from the keyboard.

(Looking back, this was my second chance to power off and on.)

Downloaded AmigaOS 4.1 Update 5 successfully using NetSurf. I think I downloaded to my hard drive. I usually download directly to RAM:.

Unarchived the lha file into RAM: and performed the update successfully.

However, my system seemed to be sluggish after the upgrade and I ended up powering off.

(I power off every night after I am finished using the system.)

Next time I powered up, the system was fine.

I have tried several times to recreate this system freeze but cannot.

Every other system freeze has been completely random:
- freeze on power up just before icons appear in my AmiDock, reset and reboots OK.
- freeze while using web browser, reset and reboots OK.



Here is some further information regarding my USB sticks:
512 MB Lexar JumpDrive formatted for FFS2 (long filenames)
512 MB Kingston DataTraveler standard format
4GB Duracell HCSD card plugged into a SD-to-USB adaptor which plugs into any available USB port. This unit looks like a thick USB stick.
