What does p96LoadDefaultMonitor do?

My system won't boot with p96LoadDefaultMonitor running in the Startup-Sequence.
Edit: The culprit was actually iprefs -- replaced with the version from update 4 and it boots now. Presumably a symptom of another problem -- need to keep digging.

P96LoadDefaultMonitor's task is to load the default monitor settings if you don't have a suitable monitor file in DEVS:Monitors/. For example, if you have a Radeon 9000 graphics card and no "DEVS:Monitors/Radeon 9000" file (+icon) is found, then p96LoadDefaultMonitor will set up the graphics card using the default settings. The default settings are: use DDC to get the screen-modes, and enable interrupts.

Yes, it's probably a symptom of another problem. I remember booting hanging at IPrefs if the battery backed up clock wasn't set (happened a few years ago). However, it only happened when booting from the hard-drive. I never did figure out what the root cause was, but suspect a timing issue.
