The hidden boot partition handles the amigaboot.of.
Hi All,
I just got registered on this forum and want to introduce myself as the user Epsilon from AmigaWorld.net forums who had this thread's problem with the X1000...ChrisH was kind enough to put it on here on my behalf. It is now fixed, but it did make me panic...
I am pleased to meet you all and thank you so much for the hard work and energy to make the X1000 happen - after years of terrible slow NG Amiga hardware you have made me very happy with the X1000 performance, and I know there is more to come with 3d drivers, OS4.2, etc!
I won't repeat what I said on the other forum too much but the X1000 system suddenly wouldn't boot after it locked up running DOSBox (it has done it several times already that day) - it came up with the X1000 boot screen, prompted for CD or HDD boot, and when it booted hdd it produced the error *** program exit status=0, and provided the CFE> prompt.
I didn't get the opportunity to type anything at the prompt before it quickly flashed an exception list error and rebooted. It kept doing this until I powered off.
I fixed the problem by burning off the 4.1.5 iso image on the HDD (which I had backed up previously) to disc, and booted of it to the Live CD workbench. I then attached my system partition backup I made recently to USB disk to the X1000.
Following a suggestion about the amigaboot.of file and also the kickstart folders having something to do with the boot process, I copied both from the backup I made back onto the sys: partition.
This fixed the problem and I was able to boot from HDD again.
I made a backup of the apparently dodgy amigaboot.of file in case you want to look at it, but to be honest after reading the comments here that the file is not used I don't know for sure if it was the contents of the kickstart folder or amigaboot.of file itself that prevented booting. (I didn't keep a backup of the old kickstart folder)
For the sake of completeness I wanted to say what I did to fix it, although I am not 100% which restored folder or file may have had an issue that needed correcting.
I am going to install the SDK and update2 files on the hyperion site now that I have received the serial number email (thank you) and registered it to my existing Hyperion profile. I couldn't find an update1 archive so I wanted to confirm it is ok to install update2 directly onto this install?
I am keen to play around with portablE. After checking out Chris's website and examples the other day I am keen to get into it. Never coded in E before, and been a long time since doing coding in assembler on 68k last century!
The new X1000 is my first use of AmigaOS4.1 in years since my Sam440ep died suddenly and I am enjoying it very much - hopefully no more scares!
Any further X1000 problems I will bring it here directly now I have access.
Catcha,
Epsilon
